This one today is for my fabulous adult students. The people who are managing to juggle jobs, family, and making time for themselves to learn to play the piano for recreation. I'm going to be blunt here.
You will have weeks when you can't practice for a half hour every day.
It's OK.
If you're having a week like mine with a house full of sickness. or an extra busy time at work. I encourage you to use small chunks of time during the day to your advantage.
Take 5-10 minutes and instead of scrolling around on social media, go play through a section of your piece mindfully and correctly. Fix any mistakes and repeat slowly. These small time chunks can add up to big improvements.
This is my small section today-the accompaniment to a Handel violin sonata. I'm working this section 5 minutes at a time between lessons today.
How do you fit in practice when things get crazy?

Hi friends! I fell off the wagon posting every day about my practice journey. I had a few aha moments that were pretty big about the way that I have approached music making in the past vs. how I am approaching it now. And wanted to dig into those without having to worry about my social media presentation of them. I'll share more of these realizations later.
Good news: I am well on my way to meeting my goal of 25 days of intentional practice. Leaning into short time blocks has been a game changer for me. I'm making good progress and can feel my chops coming back.
I did miss one day of playing last week when we had our first good snow of the season and decided to take my daughter snow tubing. I had a moment of being pretty hard on myself, however, I decided as a recovering perfectionist not to let perfect be the enemy of the good. We had a great time tubing and I felt refreshed and ready the next day when I sat at the piano.
I even did some shopping for myself as pictured. I've almost got Granada in the bag and I'm excited to dig into the rest of the suite.
If you've read this far, thanks. Keep making music!

Days 5 and 6:
Yesterday got away from me so I'm posting 5 and 6 together day.
Though I've lightly played through this piece, I've never really worked on it.
Yesterday I worked through the notes. A pretty quick learn notewise.
Today I reviewed that and worked through the pedaling.
See that sustain pedal marking there and how the bracket comes up at the end of the measure? When you observe the marking correctly it completely changes the piece and brings it to life!
I won't lie, between my business and family responsibilities finding a block of time to sit has been tough, so I'm approaching my practice in a task based way with certain things I want to complete each day. It's easier for me to find a few shorter chunks of time each day than a whole hour at once.

Day 4: I have a very full teaching day on Tuesdays, so today I spent a few minutes between lessons sight reading through some of these.
Day 3:
Things I noticed today in no particular order:
1. It was hard to get myself to sit down and get started.
2. Once I got started the time flew.
3. I need to remind myself to breathe while I'm playing.
4. Oscar Peterson's hands are approximately 2-3 times the size of mine
5. My favorite scale warmup in the video below is great for warming up hands after coming in from 20 degree weather.

Day 2: Sunday morning gig
Church music is a relatively new part of my gigging life but I've been enjoying the lessons I've learned from digging into another musical tradition .

Happy new year friends! After several years of focusing on my family and riding the waves of the pandemic, I'm starting my journey back to a more regular practice habit. My focus this month is to focus on the art of showing up.
My goals are:
1.to play music every day in January.
2. To practice intentionally 25 of those days.
Today I selected a few "easy win" pieces to get me started. These pieces have plenty of room for improvement but they are ones that are familiar to me. My focus is really on showing up consistently this month. We have Granada by Isaac Albéniz, God Bless the Child by Arthur HerzogJr./Billie Holiday, and a couple of exercises from Oscar Peterson's excellent Jazz exercise book.
Feel to follow along with me here I'll share my intentions and reflections each day. You can feel free to use them yourself or set your own.

I've been admittedly terrible about posting on social media lately, however in honor of I wanted to share a few thoughts on what it means to shop small.
Being a small business customer means putting food on your neighbor's table and helping them to keep a roof over their head.
It means supporting a community member so they can in turn support their community.
It means turning friends into family.
It means recognizing the risk that people take when they decide that they have something to offer the world and choose to follow it.
It means supporting the idea that no matter what we've been led to believe we can live a life we choose and live differently than we always thought we had to.
Be a small business customer.
Today is small business Saturday. If you can this season, give your hard earned dollars to people who love and serve your community instead of billionaires who don't know your community exists in the first place.
