Tea at the VTAA, Hong Kong, while my students trained in front of us.
Around this table: Sisuk Pang Chi Yam and Sisuk Mok Ho Ching, both students of Sigung Ip Man and juniors of my own Sifu. Sihing Leung Chun Wai, a senior student of GM Ip Chun. And my kung fu brother Danny Chan.
Look at where everyone is looking. Out to the side, at the floor, where my students were working through their Chi Sau. That's what the conversation was about — how they were moving, where they'd come on since our last visit, what still needed attention.
And they had improved, all of them. There isn't much that pleases a teacher more than hearing that.
Sit with that for a moment. Men who learned directly from Sigung Ip Man, in the room where this art was handed down, watching Chi Sau from a small town in Cornwall and saying it was better than last time. There's no certificate for that. It's a quiet word over tea while the hands keep moving behind you, and it stays with you far longer than a piece of paper would.
This is what lineage actually is, I think. Not a chart on a wall. Older hands watching younger ones and quietly deciding whether the next lot are coming along properly.
Who first told you that you were improving, and did you believe them?
