Strengthening adult literacy helps the education outcomes of children.
A mother’s reading skill is the biggest influence on her child’s future academic success, even more than family income and the neighborhood in which the child is raised.
Efforts to help children succeed academically need a strong foundation for literacy at home. While we look to children for the future, we need to also look towards the adults of today to ensure a multi-faceted approach to positive academic outcomes.

"Literacy is a fundamental human right for all. It opens the door to the enjoyment of other human rights, greater freedoms, and global citizenship." On this 60th International Literacy Day, we are grateful for all who help us forward the cause of adult literacy in Madison County! Our doors are open to assist adults in furthering their literacy goals and to folks interested in volunteering with us. Contact us at (315)-345-1468 or [email protected] to get started!

For 60 years, one idea has remained at the heart of : everyone has the right to read, write, learn and participate fully in society.

Yet today, 739 million young people and adults still lack basic literacy skills.

UNESCO works with countries and communities to change this: strengthening literacy policies and programmes, building capacities, promoting lifelong learning and supporting partnerships that expand learning opportunities for all.

Through initiatives such as the Global Alliance for Literacy and the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, we also help spotlight effective solutions and encourage action around the world.

Because literacy is more than learning to read and write. It opens doors to knowledge, opportunity and human rights, and helps build more peaceful and sustainable societies.

60 years on, the goal remains unchanged: literacy for all.
