Toxic Positivity is everywhere:
šJust Be Happy.
šGood vibes only.
š¬Be grateful thatā¦
Unfortunately, it doesnāt work. I triedā¦
In fact toxic positivity may be invalidating your healthy, normal emotions and may have negative effects on your mental health.
If you only value positivity and happiness, you are missing out on a significant portion of the human experience. š„“š¤¢š±š”š
If you feel love you will likely experience loss, grief and pain too. š
And while the ānegativeā emotions- like grief- arenāt fun, how would you know what joy or excitement is if you donāt have a reference point?
I get it⦠you donāt want to sit with the discomfort of those feelings. (If you havenāt allowed them it can scare the s**t out of you- like itās a black hole thereās no return. Not true!)
Yet, resisting or numbing yourself to negative emotions means you canāt fully experience the positive ones either. š
But hereās the dealā¦Life is pretty much 50/50 of āgoodā and ābadā emotions. There will be times where you experience more joy and fun and times when it is dark, heavy and difficult. āÆļø
Trying to avoid negative emotions is fruitless. Think all the positive thoughts and affirmations you want, but life is still going to throw you curveballsā¦
Now you can absolutely determine how you react to those circumstances. And Iām all for learning how to be emotionally resilient, agile & to not stay in the pain & discomfort any longer than you need. (This is the work I do with you as a mindset coach.)
Truly understanding my emotions and how my thoughts & feelings work together was one of the best things I ever did for myself, my kids, and everyone I interact with. ā¤ļøāÆļø
Positivity can be helpful and beautiful⦠itās just not realistic to live there and never experience ānegativeā emotions.
How do you know if you have toxic positivity in your life? As always, it starts with awareness.
*You can start with recognizing when and how you use it.
*How did you feel when you received this kind of invalidation of your feelings from others?
