Omaha Benson, Class of '74

Omaha Benson, Class of '74 We're the best of all before because we're the class of '74. Benson High School is one of the oldest high schools in Nebraska, founded in 1904. It stuck.

It is currently a decision science and career pathways magnet. Famous alumni include 1939 University of Iowa quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick, and Floyd Kalber, an NBC news anchor, host of the Today Show and WLS-Chicago news anchor. The school is reputed to have gained its rather unusual nickname, the Bunnies, in the 1920s. The legend is that following a loss to BHS, a rival foo

tball coach was grousing to a local newspaper about the condition of Benson's football field and referring to the many rodent dens in the field was quoted as saying,"we didn't lose to Benson, we lost to the bunnies." In 1974, the Omaha Public School District used junior high schools rather than middle schools. Benson was, at the time, a three year high school with grades 10 through 12 only. As sophomores, there were just over 600 members of the class of 1974. From that class have emerged chemists, teachers, lawyers, physicians, entertainers, nurses, clergy, musicians, judges, journalists, writers, homemakers, entrepreneurs and any number of others who have given back to their communities. The purpose of this page is to allow members of the class of '74 to network and to provide information on upcoming events and reunions.
