On this day in 1974, news stations announced the ruling in Laffey v. Northwest Airlines, in which a federal judge ordered the airline to pay back wages to stewardesses who had been fired for their weight or received a lower salary than male counterparts.
Mary Pat Laffey, Northwest Airlines' first female purser, led the class-action suit after witnessing a pattern of discrimination. After a six week trial, Judge Aubrey Robinson ruled that Northwest Airlines had violated the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and owed the women back pay.
Northwest appealed the case for another eleven years until the Supreme Court upheld the ruling and stewardesses finally received their due.
