We’re incredibly grateful to Chancellor Joanne Li for taking the time to speak at a CEO meeting before spring break.
She detailed growing up in Hong Kong with limited resources, to stepping into multiple leadership roles across the U.S., to working her way to Chancellor. She spoke about the roadblocks she faced as a woman, Asian, immigrant, and first-generation college student—and how she navigated them with resilience and determination.
Her story is a powerful reminder that your identity and starting point do not define your future. Your current situation is just one chapter, not your whole story. Through perseverance, self-awareness, and staying true to what works best for you, anything is possible.
One message that stuck with all of us: “What I see in you, you have yet to discover.”
She encouraged students to believe in their potential no matter what. Something that can be applied no matter what career path you choose. Chancellor Li emphasized having a strong support system, working in ways that best fit YOU, and focusing on the things that will truly add value to your life.
Chancellor Li, thank you for giving students the opportunity to hear such an empowering story. You continue to inspire students to believe in their potential, focus on what truly matters, and build their own path to success. It is obvious how much you care about your students here at UNO.

ALL UNO STUDENTS ARE WELCOME, and there will be plenty of free food…
We are excited to share that Chancellor Li will be joining us for our upcoming CEO session next week!
This event will offer an inspiring discussion on leadership, perseverance, and what you can do now as a student to pursue a strong and successful career. Chancellor Li will share insights from her journey from Hong Kong to America as a first-generation student, becoming dean of the Florida International University College of Business, to UNO’s Chancellor! She will discuss the challenges she has overcome, along with advice for students looking to invest in their future and create meaningful impact.
This is an exceptional opportunity for students to learn from a leader who plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our university and community.

Last week our very own Professor Cochran put on an engaging and insightful ideation workshop for our members 💡
Our biggest takeaway - Business ideas aren’t discovered.. they’re engineered.
Stop chasing skills.
Start stacking skills.
Find inefficiencies.
And solve real problems.
Thanks for a great meeting!

Yesterday CEO and SLAM had the privilege of hosting Mayor John Ewing for a thoughtful and inspiring conversation with our students. He shared reflections from more than 40 years of leadership and public service, offering valuable insight into resilience, growth, and the responsibility each generation carries to improve the world around them.
Hearing directly from the leader of our city was a meaningful experience for our members and an important moment for our organization.
We wrapped up with a quick 0.5 photo because if Gen Z is good at anything, it’s documenting a moment.
Thank you to Mayor Ewing for joining us, and to our executive team for helping make this event possible!

Yesterday we had the honor of hosting Sarah Spooner, the visionary entrepreneur behind Four Sisters Boutique, one of Omaha’s most successful and influential retail brands. With ten years of experience, a strong community presence, and a reputation for trendsetting in Nebraska’s boutique scene, Sarah brought the kind of insight that only a decade of real entrepreneurship can teach.
Key Takeaways
• Plan ahead. Her strong business plan is what helped her get her first loan and open her store.
• Don’t stop after hearing “no.” She was rejected several times but kept going until she found the right opportunity.
• Use social media wisely. She grew her brand by connecting with people online early and consistently.
• Hire thoughtfully. Choosing employees from different schools and backgrounds helped her reach more customers.
• Trust your team. Delegating allowed her business to grow without burning herself out.
• Keep improving. She stays successful by updating her products, events, and ideas every year.
