The Nebraska Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSLHA) joined Governor Jim Pillen at the Nebraska State Capitol to recognize May as National Speech-Language-Hearing Month.
As part of the ceremony, Governor Pillen recognized two individuals for their perseverance and dedication in overcoming communication challenges. These nominations were submitted by UNO speech-language pathology graduate students Madison Ferrin and Ashley Franzen.
Robert Donnelly was honored for his determination following a 2022 stroke that resulted in aphasia and apraxia of speech. Through consistent therapy, daily practice, and the use of augmentative communication tools, Robert has demonstrated remarkable commitment to improving his communication abilities.
Shanita Rice was also recognized for her resilience and progress following a stroke. Through years of therapy and continued effort, Shanita has made meaningful gains in her communication skills while maintaining a positive attitude and strong sense of determination.
National Speech-Language-Hearing Month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and to recognize the professionals who provide life-changing care to individuals across Nebraska.
