So happy about this partnership and the work Tom is doing to better our addiction counseling community! 🤝✨

We are excited to celebrate UNO Counseling faculty member Tom Maxson for his leadership in developing Nebraska’s updated Substance Use Evaluation Training in collaboration with the UNO Counseling Department and the Grace Abbott School of Social Work.

Beginning this fall, the training will serve as the statewide standard for newly registering providers conducting substance use evaluations, helping ensure high-quality, evidence-informed services for both adult and juvenile populations. Tom’s expertise and dedication to the counseling and addiction professions continue to make a meaningful impact across Nebraska.

Congratulations, Tom, on this outstanding accomplishment and thank you for your commitment to advancing the field! 👏🎉

It’s nice to brag about our amazing alumni 😊So proud of the work Michelle is doing! 🫶

Social worker and UNO alumna Michelle Patton is helping children and families through some of their hardest moments in the emergency department at Children’s Nebraska.

A graduate of the Grace Abbott School of Social Work, Patton provides resources and comfort — supporting families through mental health assessments, trauma response, child abuse concerns, safety planning, custody questions, and urgent needs that can follow a child’s visit to the hospital. | https://heyor.ca/Tnb6qL

Substance use disorders are on the rise, yet too few people are able to access treatment. That’s why we’re excited to launch Project BEST: Building Expertise in Substance Treatment.🤘❤️

Through a partnership between the Grace Abbott School of Social Work and Region 6, Project BEST is creating new pathways to increase the number of Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADCs) in Nebraska.

✨ Summer 2026 intensive courses
✨ Supervision opportunities with experienced LADCs
✨ Stipends for community participants
✨ Housing support for those traveling to Omaha
✨ CEUs for practitioners and course credit for students

By investing in education, accessibility, and workforce development, we’re helping build a stronger behavioral health workforce for Nebraska’s future. 📣 We Want to Hear From You!

To better understand opportunities and challenges related to strengthening the social work workforce in rural and frontier Nebraska, the Grace Abbott School of Social Work at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is hosting virtual focus groups as part of a statewide research study.

We have been grateful to hear from social workers across the state and are still actively welcoming participants. We are especially hoping to increase representation from western and central Nebraska. If you or someone you know serves one of the counties highlighted on the map below, we would love for you to join us.

Focus groups are informal, virtual, and take about one hour.
