We are deeply saddened to share the news that our beloved Dr. Phil Smith has passed away. Phil was the visionary behind many endeavors, including our very own Center. You may have heard the story, but 20+ years ago, Dr. Smith approached Sharon Medcalf and asked her to take a risk and develop a Center aimed at educating the State of Nebraska on preparedness and bioterrorism. The rest, as we say, is history.

Dr. Smith leaves a legacy of mentorship, advocacy, education and friendship. His quiet demeanor, his gentle wisdom, his dry wit are all reminders of this incredible man. He left giant footprints in a global arena, and took up residency in many of our hearts. We will miss you deeply Phil.

Please consider sharing your memories of Dr. Smith, and we welcome any of your photos.

We watch in frightened solidarity with you all as we witness the devastating fires taking place in Los Angeles right now. Similar to Lahaina, HI, we struggle to comprehend that these things can happen.

Hearing the stories of people forced to flee their homes, many with no notice, should give us all pause. We encourage you to reflect on your own personal preparedness activities for your household and family and ensure that you have a plan (and a checklist of what to grab last minute) a packed bag, and key important items you need such as medications, pet supplies, activities for children, bottles, formula, a list of important contacts, etc.

If you are impacted by this event, please know you are in our hearts.

Each year, CPERS conducts a Public Health Emergency Response Coordinator (ERC) immersion program. Each cohort goes through a 2-day ToP Facilitation Methods workshop that arms them with the skills and confidence to facilitate authentically and inclusively. This year we also have two UNMC College of Public Health team members with us. 😊

This years workshop is underway in Grand Island. Don’t worry - we are in a basement, safe from the weather. ⛈️ 👍🏻
