Let’s get tools into kids’ hands that actually teach them how to regulate 💚
Self-control isn’t something kids just have.
It’s something we teach.
And simple tools like this make it stick.

What we give attention to… grows.
And that includes the behaviors we don’t want.
When a child is whining, interrupting, or acting out, it’s so easy to jump in with correction, reminders, or frustration.
But here’s the shift:
Every time we give big attention to those behaviors,
we’re teaching the brain
👉 this works
👉 do this again
Not because they’re being “bad”
But because their body and brain are learning patterns.
So what do we do instead?
Notice the small wins.
Catch the effort.
Reinforce what you want to see more of.
Even if it feels tiny.
“I see you waiting.”
“You used a calm voice.”
“You kept trying.”
That’s how behavior changes.
That’s how the brain learns.
Less spotlight on the negative.
More light on what’s working.

Behind every “behavior” is a nervous system asking for support.
Not attention seeking.
Not defiance.
Not “bad.”
Just a body and brain that don’t know what to do yet.
And that’s where teaching comes in.

Don’t expect regulation without education.
If kids don’t understand what’s happening in their body and brain, they can’t respond on purpose.
Regulation is a skill.
And every skill has to be taught.

Nervous System Literacy (NSL) is the ability to recognize, understand, communicate, and intentionally respond to what is happening in the body and brain.
At its core, it is about awareness of the nervous system and how it drives emotion, thinking, and behavior.
The nervous system is constantly scanning for safety or threat.
This process happens automatically, before a child ever chooses how to act.
When the system is activated, we see changes like:
• increased heart rate
• muscle tension
• faster breathing
• difficulty thinking clearly
These physiological shifts directly impact behavior.
This is why a child may:
• react quickly
• struggle to focus
• become overwhelmed
• shut down or avoid
Without understanding these body based processes, behavior is often misinterpreted as defiance or lack of effort.
Nervous System Literacy changes that.
It gives children a framework to:
• notice internal body signals
• label what is happening
• understand why it is happening
• use strategies to regulate their state
As regulation improves, access to the thinking brain increases.
This leads to better decision making, problem solving, and social interaction.
Nervous System Literacy is not about eliminating emotions.
It is about building the ability to work with the body so that emotions and behaviors can be managed effectively.
This is a foundational skill that supports learning, relationships, and overall development both in school and at home.

We teach kids to read.
We teach kids to write.
But very few kids are taught
how to calm their body.
And that changes everything.
🎶 Our Little Minds Big Feelings songs are now on YouTube.
These aren’t just songs.
They’re brain-body tools kids can actually use when feelings get big.
Because when a strategy is paired with music…
it sticks.
Go listen, save, and use them at home or in your classroom 💛
