Victim or Victress 04/17/2026

A 3-year-old boy was cut across the face at an Omaha Walmart last Tuesday by a woman who shoplifted a knife off the shelf, took control of his shopping cart, and forced his caretaker at knifepoint into the parking lot.

The officers who responded were trained and capable. They handled it. But the knife had already moved before they arrived.

Less than two years ago, a nearly identical situation in an Ohio grocery store parking lot ended with a 3-year-old boy dead and his mother stabbed. I covered that case in detail only months ago โ€” the same warnings, the same action items, the same hybrid threat environment that makes these incidents possible anywhere, any time. Nobody wanted to believe it would happen again this close to home.

Same setup. Different outcome.

I drove past that Walmart with my wife recently. She is more prepared than most people. Even she stopped mid-sentence.

These things always happen somewhere else. Until they don't.
I spent years training the officers who responded to that scene. I know what capable looks like under pressure. And I know what the people already in that store needed that morning โ€” tools, mindset, and permission โ€” that no amount of police capability could give them after the fact.

This article covers all of it. The two cases. The system that failed. The mindset that saves lives. Two women โ€” a nail salon and a shotgun โ€” who refused to be victims when it mattered most. And what every parent, caregiver, and woman responsible for a child needs to know right now.

Read it. Share it. Someone you know needs it today.

Victim or Victress Why the Women in Your Life Need to Be Able to Defend Themselves โ€” And Why Righteous Violence Should Never Be Off the Table

5 Seconds. Go.

Look at this office space.

No overthinkingโ€”just react:
Where can I get out?
Where could I lock this down?
What could I use right now if I had to fight?

Thereโ€™s no set order.

Itโ€™s about what solves the problem fastest in that moment.

Sometimes you leave immediately.
Sometimes youโ€™re already too closeโ€”you barricade.
Sometimes youโ€™re out of timeโ€”you act.

Go back and look again.

Take a few more seconds and push it:
What did you miss?
How many improvised weapons are actually around you?
What could buy you time or create space?

This is how you build real awarenessโ€”quick reps in normal environments.

Not a script.
A skillset.

You can generally judge a book by its cover โ€” because people choose their book cover.

I was teaching a church group full of the world's most important VIPs (moms), and we covered the "A" in my ABCD awareness system: Appearance.

Not immutable characteristics. Not demographics. I'm talking about the choices people make when they present themselves to the world.

Some spend more time and energy on their book covers than others.

Tattoos that say "F the police"? That's a belief system on display. Baseball caps worn low? Bandanas? Hoodies pulled up? These are deliberate signals.

Here's the thing: the uniform of today's armed robber isn't much different from the old movie bandit. Swap the cowboy hat for a hoodie. Swap the bandana for a COVID mask. Same playbook, different decade.
Dark baggy clothing does three things:

-Hides weapons
-Makes them look larger and more intimidating
-Makes it easier to hide in shadows

And watch for camera avoidance. Someone deliberately not looking toward the obvious security cameras? That's a tell.

This profiling is based on observable choices or actions towards appearance. People choose how they want to be seen โ€” and sometimes, they're telling you exactly who they are.

As a professional man-at-arms across three decades and three special operations fields, one of the most dangerous things you can walk around with isn't a weapon.

It's suicidal empathy.

Nilufar Yasmin was a 51-year-old mother of two. A gas station clerk in Fort Myers, Florida. Kind woman. Opened her store after morning prayers.

Days before her death, a man came in, couldn't get money from the ATM, and demanded she pay him. She explained it wasn't her responsibility. He left angry.
He came back with a hammer.

She watched him smash her car windshield from inside the store. Then walked outside to confront him. Unarmed. Alone. No plan. No escape route. She showed no defensive response. No raised hands. No attempt to create distance.

Seven hammer blows. Gone in seconds.

That's suicidal empathy in action โ€” the instinct to extend goodwill even when every signal says the threat is real. Culture and comfort condition it into us. It can get you killed. The man was a mentally unstable illegal immigrant as well. Suicidal empathy is a societal problem as well as a personal one.

This is the hybrid threat environment. Fractured minds. Zero warning. 7 AM at a gas station.

You don't rise to the occasion. You fall to your level of preparation.

The Everyday Defender exists for exactly this. Practical frameworks from the special operations and law enforcement world โ€” for people who refuse to be victims.

As a professional man-at-arms across three decades and three different special operations fields, one thing I know for certain: you have to control yourself before you can control the situation. And nothing beats teamwork.

This video proves both.

A woman with a knife goes on a rampage inside a grocery store in Eastern Europe. No police. No security. Just regular people โ€” and they handled it better than most trained groups would.

Watch what they do:

Someone grabs a grocery cart and uses it as a weapon and a shield. Others move the innocent people to safety. A woman at the front door makes a split-second call โ€” she barricades it shut to trap the attacker. Then, the moment she gets an opening, she unlocks it to let a child escape.

She's not panicking. She's processing. She's thinking. She's in control.

That's not luck. She was running that loop in real time without even knowing it had a name.

The group used teamwork, improvised tools, and good decision-making to disable the attacker without killing her โ€” when they absolutely could have.

Here's the biological reality: when large males are present in a physical confrontation, they should be the first line of response. That's not cultural โ€” that's hardwired. But when the males aren't there, the question isn't whether mom steps up.
The question is whether she's ready to.

I broke this down recently for a group of mothers at a church. The principles in this video โ€” awareness, teamwork, decision-making under stress โ€” are exactly what I cover in The Everyday Defender.

As a former Green Beret, I don't say things to scare people. I say them because they're true.

Eina Kwon was 34 years old, pregnant, and on her way to work with her husband when Cordell Goosby sprinted up to their car at a red light and emptied a magazine through the window.

He admitted he did it. Both the prosecution AND defense agreed he was legally insane at the time. He's headed to a psychiatric hospital โ€” with future release subject to state and court approval.

Let that sink in.

I said this recently to a group of mothers at a local church: if someone is violent and mentally unstable in this country, they essentially get to go free until they slaughter an innocent person โ€” and THEN we finally do something about it.

That's not a political take. It's too often the truth.

Goosby had a prior criminal record in Illinois. He was prohibited from owning a firearm. He used a stolen gun anyway.

This is the hybrid threat environment.

It's not always a calculated criminal running a play you can read. More and more, it's a fractured mind, a fringe belief system that found 5,000 followers on social media, and a weapon they weren't supposed to have. The threat calculus has changed. Your awareness has to change with it.

Nobody plans to be at that red light. Nobody puts "magazine dump from a stranger" on their threat assessment for Tuesday morning.

That's exactly why you build the habits BEFORE you need them.

If you want to understand what that actually looks like in the real world โ€” for yourself, for your family โ€” I break it down in The Everyday Defender. Not theory. Not fear-mongering. Just the practical framework that closes the gap between "I hope nothing happens" and actually being ready.

Most protectors make two critical mistakes when it comes to their family's safety โ€” and both of them are silent killers.

They didn't. Your threat awareness, your tactical thinking, your crisis decision-making โ€” none of it transferred. Living with a protector doesn't make someone protected.

You won't.

Officer Donald Sahota was armed, trained, and standing in his own driveway protecting his family when a responding deputy shot him in the back within four seconds of arriving on scene โ€” mistaking him for the threat. He died. The suspect ran into the house where his family was waiting.

He was there. He was ready. It wasn't enough.

I honor his bravery and sacrifice, but he made some major mistakes. I hope others will learn from them and avoid tragedy.

Your job, your assignment, your circumstances โ€” any of it can put distance between you and the people you'd die for. If your family doesn't have a system that works without you, they don't have a system.

That's exactly why I wrote ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—˜๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜†๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ โ€” currently the #1 new release in Safety & First Aid on Amazon.
