November 10, 2023 marks 54 years since the Omaha 54 protest. On this day in 1969, a group of 54 University of Nebraska at Omaha students demanding equal treatment and investment in Black History education were arrested after a sit-in. The activism and personal sacrifices of these students played a pivotal role in the creation of the UNO Department of Black Studies.
