ORCA is proud of our UNO students who have spent months developing meaningful research and creative projects with the guidance of faculty mentors. Their hard work culminated in outstanding presentations at the Student Research and Creative Activity Fair. One example of this dedication can be seen in the work of Aubrey Hutter a student researcher in the Department of Biology, where she is tackling one of the most significant challenges in modern medicine: Alzheimerâs disease. Her project, "Exploration of PYP-1 as a therapeutic target," uses a worm model to identify specific genes that could eventually be targeted by drugs to treat Alzheimerâs and alleviate symptoms like memory loss and coordination issues.
Working under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Geisbert, Aubrey has embraced the reality of high-level research. "One of the best pieces of advice he always gives me is: just try it," Aubrey says. "So much of research is trial and error and figuring out what might work and what doesnât." While her current focus is on the gene PYP-1âwhich has shown a significant increase in helping subjects with Alzheimer's-related defectsâshe is already looking ahead to exploring other potential genetic targets to expand the impact of her work.
