🎓 Executive MBA Alumni Spotlight: Jennifer Lea

Investing in yourself always pays dividends—and few stories illustrate that better than that of EMBA alumna Jennifer Lea (founder of Entry Envy).

After nearly a decade in the legal industry, Jennifer joined the Executive MBA program looking to broaden her horizons. What she gained was a completely transformed approach to leadership, an international perspective that helped her scale her own company years later, and a lifelong professional network (including a best friend and key business mentor!).

We asked Jennifer to share how the EMBA program shaped her career and perspective:

Q: How has the Executive MBA affected your life?

"I entered the program with eight years of experience in the legal field and didn’t realize how myopic my view of business had become. Learning alongside professionals from so many different industries exposed me to entirely different ways of thinking, leading, and solving problems. It also dramatically broadened my network beyond the legal industry."

Q: If you had to explain the program's value in 30 seconds, what would you say?

"The letters behind my name have mattered more often than I ever expected. It’s about what it communicates to other people about my experience, education, and credibility. The Executive MBA has quietly opened doors throughout my career in ways I probably don’t even fully recognize."

Q: Which skills or perspectives have been most valuable to your work?

"One of the most impactful experiences was our international capstone project... Ten years after graduation, when I owned my own company, some of my first hires were overseas. I had zero hesitation about building an international team, and I attribute much of that confidence to my experience in the EMBA program."

Q: What would you tell someone considering the program?

"You can never go wrong investing in yourself. If you are considering applying, trust your intuition. You may not know exactly how the experience will shape your career or your life when you begin, but the investment in your own growth, perspective, confidence, and relationships will continue paying dividends long after graduation."

In today’s global business landscape, success requires more than just functional expertise—it demands the seamless integration of strategy, operations, and cross-functional leadership.

We love seeing how our alumni take the lessons learned in the UNO Executive MBA program and apply them to drive major international impact.

Here is what Shantell Nelson (EMBA '07), AVP of Director Field Sales Europe QSR at Ecolab, had to say about her experience:

“What I valued most was the integration of strategy, operations, and leadership. In a multinational environment, decisions cannot be made in isolation. The program strengthened my ability to lead cross-functional initiatives across borders.”

Thank you, Shantell, for representing the UNO EMBA community on the global stage and setting such a powerful example of executive leadership!

When you are deciding between a traditional MBA and an Executive MBA (EMBA), it is easy to assume the only difference is the class schedule.

In reality, those four little letters—"EMBA"—signal a completely different level of professional seniority, peer collaboration, and strategic focus to recruiters, executive search firms, and prospective corporate partners.

If you are trying to decide which path is right for your career trajectory, here is why choosing the Executive route changes the game for your professional brand:

1. Immediate Seniority vs. Career Foundationalism
Traditional MBA: Often geared toward professionals early in their careers (typically 2 to 5 years of experience) who are looking to learn foundational business mechanics, pivot industries, or break into mid-level management.

Executive MBA: Signals to the market that you entered the program already possessing significant leadership, managerial, or executive experience. It tells anyone viewing your profile that your peer group consisted of directors, VPs, and seasoned business leaders, allowing you to instantly leverage a high-level network.

2. Tailored for Executive Search & Corporate Recruiting
Executive recruiters and search firms look for indicators of advanced, mid-to-late-career business training.

Listing an EMBA ensures you appear in specialized talent pools tailored for executive roles, board positions, or enterprise leadership functions.

It instantly sets you apart from the large pool of traditional or online MBA graduates competing for mid-level management positions.

3. Sophisticated Strategic Mastery
A standard MBA focus is often operational. An EMBA curriculum is explicitly structured around macroeconomic trends, enterprise-wide strategy, global markets, corporate governance, and cross-functional leadership. It shapes your personal brand as someone who views businesses through an owner's or C-suite lens, rather than just a functional specialist.

💡 The Takeaway: If you already have established professional experience and your goal is to accelerate into upper management, executive leadership, or corporate boardrooms, the Executive MBA is the credential that matches your ambition.

Are you looking to make your next major leadership leap? Let's talk about how the UNO Executive MBA program can elevate your career.

Executive MBA Alumni Spotlight: Remembering Eswari Kalugasalam

The University of Nebraska Omaha Executive MBA community deeply mourns the passing of brilliant alumna Eswari Kalugasalam (June 7, 1967 – January 1, 2026), who died at age 58. Eswari was a dedicated leader, an insightful mentor, and a powerful force for good in the Nebraska business and veteran communities.

"Her energy was contagious, and I have yet to meet anyone that can lead a discussion like her. Laughter flowed through conversations." — Colleague remembrance

A Passion for Driving Strategic Excellence:

Eswari brought an incredible wealth of experience and intellect to her cohort and the broader UNO community. Throughout her life and distinguished career, she established herself as an expert in strategic planning, program management, and organizational transformation.

Her professional journey was defined by an ability to navigate complex business challenges with continuous grace and a sharp, analytical mind. Eswari's unique blend of strategic vision and genuine, people-first leadership left an indelible mark on every executive boardroom, workshop, and professional circle she entered.

Empowering Veterans and Small Businesses:

Eswari’s true legacy shines through her tireless work as a champion for others. As a leading consultant for the Nebraska Business Development Center (NBDC) and the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC), she dedicated herself to helping others realize their dreams.

She focused heavily on supporting military veterans, translating their skills from service into successful entrepreneurship. Eswari didn't just review business plans; she became a primary pillar of support during critical, life-altering transitions for her clients. Colleagues and clients alike remember her as a natural "connector" who consistently went above and beyond to give small businesses the tools, mentorship, and confidence they needed to thrive.

Celebrating a Vibrant Legacy:

Beyond her exceptional professional qualifications, Eswari will be remembered most for the sheer warmth, joy, and light she brought into every room. Her infectious smile and compassionate spirit turned brief professional encounters into lifelong connections.

The UNO Executive MBA program honors Eswari's memory, her remarkable contributions to our business community, and her lifelong commitment to helping others reach their full potential. She will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and the countless entrepreneurs whose lives she permanently changed for the better.
