The newest episode of the “What Time Is It?” Podcast is LIVE—and this conversation is definitely one you don’t want to miss.

Our guest is Nick Masington—a longtime family law attorney, MMA coach, gym owner, and fixture in the Pennsylvania combat sports community.

Nick has been practicing law in Northeast Pennsylvania since 1990, building a career focused primarily on family law, divorce, and child custody. He’s also the founding and managing partner of ARM Lawyers and has been recognized multiple times by Super Lawyers, including being named a Top 10 Family Law Attorney for 2025.

But there’s another side to Nick that brings this conversation right into our world. 🥊

Outside the courtroom, Nick operates Rat Pack Fighting Systems and Rat Pack’s Heavy Metal Gym, a 5,000-square-foot combat sports facility in Palmerton, PA. He’s a coach and manager for professional and amateur competitor and instructs submission grappling.

And, in true “What Time Is It?” fashion, we go WAY beyond the obvious.

In this episode, we talk about:

⚖️ More than three decades practicing law
🥊 Building and running a successful MMA training facility
🥋 Coaching professional and amateur fighters
👊 The similarities between combat sports and the practice of law
🧠 Discipline, resilience, and the mindset required to succeed
👨‍👩‍👦 Family, business, and the unique relationship between the two
🏆 Competing and continuing to train later in life
🔥 The evolution of MMA and combat sports
💬 Lessons learned from decades in both the courtroom and the gym

This is a conversation about fighting, family, business, competition, coaching, and what it takes to keep pushing forward.

MONDAY IN REVIEW 👊🔥

What a way to kick off the week!

🥋 Our Kids Program put in the work through games that build real Jiu-Jitsu skills while having an absolute blast:
🎯 Handcuffs
⭕ Circle Game
🌋 The Floor is Lava
🐊 Swamp Monster
🏰 Castles & Dragons

Along the way they also worked on strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and confidence—the foundation for everything they’ll do on the mats.

💥 12 PM Adult Beginners focused on Knee-on-Belly, learning how to establish control, create pressure, and develop smart strategy from one of the most dominant positions in Jiu-Jitsu.

💥 6 PM Adult Beginners studied Pressure Passing for the Streets, emphasizing efficient, high-percentage passing that translates to practical self-defense.

💥 7 PM Adult Gi kicked off our new study of Open Guard, focusing on Spider Guard controls and how they connect to “The Trinity” to create attacks, sweeps, and transitions.

Every class builds on the last. Every lesson adds another piece to the puzzle. If you weren’t here Monday...
..you missed a lot.

Don’t worry—today is another opportunity to get better. We’ll see you on the mats! 💙🥋

This month in our Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum, we’re diving deep into one of the most dynamic and versatile positions in grappling: Open Guard.

Unlike closed guard, where your legs are locked around your opponent, open guard uses your feet, shins, hooks, and grips to manage distance, create angles, off-balance your opponent, and set up attacks. It’s a position that rewards timing, movement, and strategy, making it an essential part of every well-rounded grappler’s game.

Throughout the month, we’ll explore concepts and techniques including:

Maintaining distance and controlling posture
Establishing grips and breaking your opponent’s balance (kuzushi)
Common open guard positions such as butterfly guard, De La Riva, spider guard, lasso guard, and X-guard
Sweeps from various open guard positions
Entries into leg attacks and back takes
Transitions between different guards
Guard retention and recovering open guard after your opponent begins to pass
Strategies for connecting open guard to your overall game
Whether you’re looking to become more difficult to pass, improve your sweeping ability, or develop a more offensive guard, this month’s curriculum will provide the tools and concepts to elevate your Jiu-Jitsu.

We encourage everyone to attend consistently throughout the month, as each week’s lessons will build on the previous material. The more classes you attend, the more you’ll see how these positions connect into a complete open guard system.

See you on the mats
