Native Programs at The Evergreen State College Native Programs at The Evergreen State College representing Indigenous academic and public service programs that embrace indigenous ways of knowing.

We are comprised of undergraduate and graduate academic programs, the Longhouse Education & Cultural Center, Enduring Legacies Native Case Studies, Native Student Alliance, and faculty from many different academic areas of the college interested in providing an educational environment that reflects the academic interests of Indigenous students. Evergreen has these Native American academic and public service programs:

*"House of Welcome" Longhouse Education and Cultural Center
*First Peoples' Advising at Evergreen
*Master of Public Administration in Tribal Governance, (which began in 2002)
*Native American and World Indigenous Peoples Studies (on-campus undergraduate)
*Reservation Based Community Determined Program (undergraduate)
*Enduring Legacies, Native Case Studies
*Native Student Alliance

Together these programs enable the college to continue and expand upon its history of responding in partnership to the educational needs of indigenous peoples. In addition to these programs, students at Evergreen can work with Native American Studies faculty throughout the undergraduate curriculum (such as in the Expressive Arts), and in graduate programs such as the Master of Environmental Studies (MES) and Master in Teaching (MIT) programs. In all Evergreen programs, Native American students, community members and tribes have a dedicated place in higher education, and easy access to technology and research services.

Evergreen students are exhibiting their maps and wool weavings in the Evergreen Gallery (on the second floor of the Evergreen Library). The exhibit is called "Art and Place: Native Weaving and Mapping in the Pacific Northwest,” after the class that Susan Pavel and Zoltán Grossman taught in fall 2025-winter 2026. The opening reception is Thursday, October 8, at 5:00-7:00 pm, with light refreshments.

The class “used art and geography as 'common ground,' incorporating cross-cultural learning to explore relationships of Pacific Northwest Native peoples to place. These connections were expressed artistically and geographically through Native wool weaving and cartography (mapmaking), particularly in Coast Salish territory along the Salish Sea in Washington and British Columbia.

The program 'wove together' Native art and place, based on the geographies and worldviews of Pacific Northwest Native nations, and developed student skills in wool weaving and cartography to express these worldviews. In fall and winter quarters, the class collaborated with the Coast Salish Wool Weaving Center and its Burke Museum exhibit 'Woven in Wool: Resilience in Coast Salish Weaving.' See https://coastsalishwoolweavingcenter.com

In fall 2025, students developed multimedia podcasts on the “Woven in Wool” artists, and in winter 2026 students developed their own applied projects in either wool weaving on Coast Salish looms, or cartography in Adobe Illustrator (producing maps of the tribal communities of each 'Woven in Wool' exhibit artist). In spring 2026, the program directly engaged students with tribal communities, and reciprocated student learning with service."
The exhibit will be up through December 11. Evergreen Gallery hours are 12-6 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and 1-6 on Wednesday. Please spread the word: https://www.evergreen.edu/houseofwelcome/gallery

Indigenous Studio Arts, Tenure-track full-time faculty position opening at The Evergreen State College in Olympia WA, fall 2025 (please share).

Job Summary: The Evergreen State College seeks a versatile and broadly trained faculty colleague to teach design and studio arts from an Indigenous perspective. Applicants should have expertise working with any of a variety of materials used by North American Indigenous artists to produce three- and/or two-dimensional works and should have expertise in the ways such materials have historically been and are currently being used in North American Indigenous communities to create art. Candidates must understand the various customs, protocols, and issues that surround the creation of both traditional and contemporary Indigenous art forms, and should be able to create curriculum that explores the variety of contexts in which Indigenous artists work.

Candidates must be able to teach students to work with a variety of tools and techniques for art making including both those developed by artists in Indigenous communities, and those appropriated from a variety of cultures by Indigenous artists to create their art. We particularly welcome candidates that work in carving or weaving, the predominant art forms of Pacific Northwest Indigenous peoples. Candidates must be prepared to teach design fundamentals as well as to explain the history and cultural contexts of Indigenous art in a way that both explains and fosters the diversity of art practice inside the numerous Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest and around the Pacific Rim. Preference will also be given to artists who regularly exhibit work and can teach students how to pursue a successful career in the visual arts.

The Evergreen State College organizes the majority of its curriculum into interdisciplinary, team-taught coordinated studies programs centered on particular themes, and organizes its faculty into interdisciplinary planning units instead of traditional disciplinary departments. Applicants are invited to address (in their letters of application) their visions of innovative approaches to teaching across disciplines, including with other faculty trained in visual arts, Native American and Indigenous studies, and other disciplines. Faculty are expected to teach students at a variety of experience levels and to develop curriculum to serve beginning, intermediate, and advanced students at the college. Because faculty from diverse disciplines are involved in curriculum planning at the college, ideal candidates for the position will demonstrate an engagement with one or more disciplines outside of visual arts. The college encourages applicants who have had experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented populations to apply. Faculty at Evergreen are expected to advise and mentor students and participate in the college’s system of shared governance.

Job Expectations: Most faculty will teach in full-time, team-taught, 16-credit programs connected by a particular theme or line of inquiry. Faculty are generally responsible for evaluating 25 students/quarter, though their programs may include up to 50-75 students, depending on the size of their teaching team. This arrangement allows for in-depth, interdisciplinary and experiential learning, and the building of strong learning communities. Faculty are also responsible for advising students as they reflect on their learning process, develop a pathway of study, and formulate their own areas of concentration.

Our teaching is student-centered, which means we are interested in helping students develop strong skills in critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaborative work. Because over 80% of our students come from underserved and marginalized groups, we are particularly invested in approaches to teaching that emphasize diversity and equity, that provide opportunities for challenge and growth, and that foster a learning environment where all are welcome and all can learn from each other.

A complete list of faculty responsibilities can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement(follow the Collective Bargain Agreement link at https://www.evergreen.edu/offices-services/faculty-hiring/benefits).

Monday, August 19: Ceremony Honoring Environmental Leader and Treaty Rights Activist Billy Frank Jr.Billy Frank Jr. Park at Northpoint (end of Marine Drive NE), 10:00 am
“The Port of Olympia is hosting a ceremony on August 19 at 10 a.m. to pay tribute to Nisqually environmental leader and treaty rights activist Billy Frank Jr. and present a new series of educational kiosks and interpretive signs that celebrate his achievements. The ceremony is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. Community leaders, elected officials and special guests from the tribal community will also be joining us for this historic event. We are especially pleased to announce that Chairman Kristopher Peters and the Squaxin Island Tribe will be performing a drum ceremony at the event…..

As announced in June, the signs were recently installed along the Billy Frank Jr. trail and in the park terminus, each highlighting a unique aspect of Frank, the Squaxin Island Tribe, and the life cycle of salmon. Informational markers were also installed to provide education about the native plants already lining the trail, and to commemorate two Canoe Landings, one by the Squaxin Island Tribe in 2012, and one by the Nisqually Tribe in 2016.”
