CSI is the Citizen Scientist Institute for grades 6-8 at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Olympia, WA. CSI combines science, civics, arts, and service learning to connect students with scientists and their community. Students at CSI apply skills and concepts learned in class to real-world science scenarios in order to gain a better understanding of how science works outside of the classroom. Students also participate in regular service-learning projects to better their understanding of civics concepts as well as to provide a benefit to the Olympia community and beyond.

Hello CSI Families,

In lieu of this year’s Fall Parent Meeting and Potluck, we are going to combine our event with the schoolwide Open House on Tuesday, September 29.

All CSI families are invited to join the schoolwide ice cream social and opening remarks from administration from 5:15–5:55 PM.

From 6:00–6:45 PM, CSI will hold our parent meeting in the gym. We’ll share information about this year’s curriculum and field investigations, followed by a presentation from the CSI Parent Board.

Our CSI meeting will overlap with the Open House classroom rotations. You are more than welcome to step out for about 10 minutes to attend a presentation in one of your student’s non-CSI classes. If you’re unable to make those presentations, you’ll have another opportunity to connect one-on-one with each teacher during conferences the last week of October.

Thank you all for being flexible and patient as we figured out how to make everything work. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hello 8th grade families,

We wanted to send a quick reminder about our 8th grade graduation celebration and BBQ on June 15th following the promotion ceremony. We know this is a busy time of year, and our original email may have gotten lost among the many end-of-year messages.

At this point, we have only had one volunteer sign up. In order for the BBQ to take place, we will need additional families to contribute food, supplies, or volunteer support. Without enough participation, we may unfortunately need to cancel the BBQ portion of the celebration.

If you are able to help, please consider signing up using the SignUpGenius link HERE. Every contribution helps make this a special day for our students.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Beth Auerbach at [email protected].

Thank you for your support!
