Congratulations to Adam Thomas who received the "Ultimate Bear Scholarship". The "Ultimate Bear Scholarship" was created by friends in memory of Austin Kelley, a 2008 graduate of Olympia High School.
Austin was a pillar of positivity in the community, known for his excellence in academics and athletics, and for his kind and caring spirit. He was a natural leader with a calming presence, who uplifted those around him through his work ethic, compassion, selflessness, and kindness.
This year the scholarship amount doubled due to a kind donation from the Class of 2025 soccer team. Thank you Boys Soccer!

Thanks Downtown Rotary!! The Olympia Rotarians are local residents who work to support their community in many ways. Since 1976, Olympia Rotary has supported Olympia High School graduates by providing scholarships and naming them in honor of past members and recognition of their community contributions. Students have been selected for scholarships because of their contributions, and their program continues to increase not only in amount but also number of scholarships awarded. They are our largest donor toward the scholarship program with over $57,000 going to Olympia High School students. We are lucky to have such supportive community groups!

Congratulations to Sydnee Chandler Trent who won the Jackson Yelle Sportsmanship Award in conjunction with Major League Baseball. In partnership with Scott Yelle and the Jackson Yelle Foundation, MLB introduced the inaugural Jackson Yelle Sportsmanship Award, presented to an athlete from each area with the honor.
Yelle lost his 21-year-old son Jackson, a student at Elon College, in a hit-and-run accident in 2023. That led Scott to start a campaign to visit all 30 MLB ballparks, a goal he first set with Jackson. This award embodies the love and passion for the game Jackson had and will continue to carry in his memory. Sydnee is a fantastic recipient

The recipient of this year's 2026 OHS Faculty Memorial Scholarship BRYNN UDO! The Olympia High School Faculty Memorial Scholarship is voted on by OHS staff. Each staff member is asked to vote for one student from the Top of the Class in honor of faculty members who are no longer with us. It is a meaningful tradition that reflects both remembrance and appreciation, and it is truly an honor for students to be selected by the faculty who know them best.

This scholarship recognizes a student who reflects the spirit of those who dedicated their lives to education through:
• Scholarship
• Attitude and conduct
• School involvement

Congratulations to Sam Rigg who won the Gordon Chamberlain “Pay It Forward” Memorial Scholarship! The scholarship began in 2020 started tthrough donations and fundraising through Oly Strong Hats. Retired Olympia School District teacher, counselor, and administrator Ellen Termine, and retired Olympia High School Foreign Language teacher, Dawn Williams have led this effort.
Gordon Chamberlain was a passionate English teacher and school administrator who saw what was unique and special in every person he met. His energy was boundless, and his ability to connect with others and appreciate people from all walks of life was a rare gift. The “Pay It Forward” Scholarship is awarded to a senior who demonstrates humility, selflessness, and a commitment to supporting others through acts of kindness. Olympia High School staff nominated a student they identified as truly selfless and service-oriented. This student respects individual differences and consistently works behind the scenes to bring out the best in others without expecting anything in return. Sam fits that description perfectly. Congratulations!

Congratulations to this year's ten Hawthorne scholarship winners who were each awarded $4,000: ETHAN BAEK, CADEN DUROCHER, KATE LIM,ALEX LIN, EMMA MAFLI, PAMELA PALMERSON, TYLER PANSOY, BRODIE SJOBOEN, JOANNA SPILKER, HAZEL STEPHENS The Hawthorne scholarship was created as a donation by Donald C. Hawthorne who graduated from Olympia High School in 1944. He earned a Science degree from UW in 1950 and a Master’s in Microbiology in 1953. He was the leading world geneticist earning his PhD in 1955. He then went on to teach biology at the University of Washington for 58 years! This endowed scholarship was created specifically for Olympia High School Students attending University of Washington after graduation. These seniors must plan to earn a degree in science, biology or math-related fields. As Dr. Hawthorne would say, “Go Purple, Be Gold”. Olympia School District OHS Career Center - Olympia, WA

Congratulations to OHS Teacher Crystal Pate who recently won the Evergreen Master in Teaching (MiT) Distinguished Educator of the Year Award for 2026. This annual award recognizes educators who have completed Evergreen's MiT or M.Ed. program and are making a meaningful difference in their schools and communities. It includes a $500 award! Crystal does it all at OHS ranging from teaching dynamic Foods Classes to running the Bearzaar, from developing a homeroom lesson to organizing professional development for teachers. Crystal plays a big role in making our school more inclusive. Evergreen should be proud of the great teacher they have sent to OHS!

We need to give a big shout out to retiring teacher Sarah Violette who has served 34 years in educaton with 27 of them at OHS. Sarah is one of those teachers who have passion for the subject. She made Shakespeare come alive to students and her students were inspired by her efforts. Rarely has their been a teacher that invested more time than Sarah with writing. One educator said she was the best teacher of writing she had ever seen. Sarah could be seen late in the afternoon/early evening grading papers that contained a wealth of feedback. Her students were always well prepared for success in the future. Also as AP/CiHS Coordinator, we had over 1600 courses taken in college this year and over 800 AP tests. Sarah is responsible for creating many of these opportunities. Check the plaque that is placed in her room recognizing all this success (pictured). Thank you Sarah for your dedication!!
