LENGUA RICA STUDENT QUESTION
Escribo "gracias por ayudando mi hijo." Pero Google dice "gracias por ayudar a mi hijo". Porque ayudar y no ayudando?

LENGUA RICA ANSWER
Two reasons.
1. "por" is a preposition. In Spanish, whenever a verb comes after a preposition, that verb always takes the infinitive form.
2. When we say "Thank you" or "Gracias," we are always thanking for some THING, whether it's an actual object or an action of some kind. Linguistically, we give thanks for a noun. If I say, "Thanks for coming," the word "coming" is acting like a noun. A verb that serves that function is called a "gerund." A gerund is "a form that is derived from a verb but that functions as a noun, in English ending in "-ing." (New Oxford American Dictionary) But in Spanish, the verb form that serves that purpose is the infinitive. That's why "Gracias por ayudar" is correct, rather than "Gracias por ayudando."

What's the best way to practice/learn correct pronunciation? I know there are some interactive apps, but I'm hesitant to buy another thing unless you think that's a good idea?

I encourage you to try out some Spanish pronunciation guidance videos (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=spanish+pronunciation+guide) and see if there's one or more that you like. In addition, I encourage you on a regular basis to record yourself reading Spanish text into your phone, then listen to the recording. This will raise your awareness of your pronunciation, give you insight into what specific mistakes you make, and give you the opportunity to address them.

LECCIÓN GRAMATICAL
A MENOS QUE (unless)

Con la expresión "a menos que" se usa el subjuntivo.

Ejemplos con el presente de subjuntivo:

-Vamos a jugar béisbol a menos que llueva. (We're going to play baseball unless it rains.)
-Voy a preparar la cena a menos que me grites. (I'm going to prepare dinner unless you yell at me.)
-El bus me va a llevar al aeropuerto a menos que yo no llegue a tiempo a la parada. (The bus is going to take me to the airport unless I don't arrive at the bus stop on time.)
-El bus me va a llevar al aeropuerto a menos que estalle una llanta. ((The bus is going to take me to the airport unless a tire explodes.)
-El bus me va a llevar al aeropuerto a menos que caiga un asteroide a la Tierra. (The bus is going to take me to the airport unless an asteroid hits the Earth.)
