Look at our Teacher Readers! Today we had our first in service day and we spent about 35 minutes discussing our staff summer common read: The Benefits of Being an Octopus by ! We participated in fishbowl style Socratic seminars and discussed the book, characters, themes, connections, and animals. It was fantastic! The outside circle used to silently participate as they listened.

Here she is! Ellie an Gigi are up starfishing in the hallway to ring in the new year. Thankyou to who first made me aware of this book ages ago now, and Thankyou to for a book that I will love forever and tell everyone about. (Also for using the name Anaïs because that was one of my student’s names and it made her day).
If you all haven’t read Starfish yet, drop everything and do it now. We are hallway ready for back to school, not classroom ready, but hallway ready.

I’m on my last day of vacation in Kauai, and I’ve been driving past this library sign all week. Today, we stopped by just as the library was closing for lunch, but the librarian David came out and let us in. This library serves as a public and school library! It’s funded by income tax, not property taxes. This is the first library in Kauai! It’s located in Koloa, just outside of Poi’pu. I saw some fun new titles that I’ll need to pick up for school - and some favorites including one of ’s books! The librarian said: I love when great books are also so simple💛 and then carried My Heart away to read on his lunch. We also chatted about how the PNW is an amazing place for kid lit. David is retiring Sept. 1, so if you’re in Koloa before then wish him a happy retirement - or ask how you can apply to be the librarian! They don’t have a replacement yet.

Don’t forget about summer reading programs in our area! We just picked up this kid’s free book after completing summer reading program! Every kid at Garfield was sent home a copy of their form as well as the TRL form! Finish both programs and you get two free books!
