Join us at the Inaugural Physician Assistant Studies Alumni Reunion on Wednesday, June 5, at NYIT de Seversky Mansion as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first graduating class of PAs and honor founding faculty member Frank A. Acevedo with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
This event provides an excellent opportunity to network, celebrate success, and inspire and support our students. Sponsorship dollars directly benefit the Department of Physician Assistant Studies' mission to provide students with engaging educational experiences that facilitate lifelong learning, enhance diverse perspectives, emphasize inter-professional practice, and foster a spirit of service with a commitment to improving the health of our communities and advancing the PA profession.

((SGA President Erin Hughes with the many gifts!))
Congratulations to the Physician Assistant Student Society on a heartfelt and outstanding event collecting toys, clothes and supplies for the three families we adopted for the holidays!
I would like to commend our amazing student society leadership for organizing, implementing and blowing away their goals (over $1500 raised). With their amazing effort and the generosity of the students, faculty and staff the five children received everything on their Santa lists! You allowed them to experience the joy and magic of the season this year!

You should all feel good about the kindness you delivered!

Alumnus Samantha Snukis came back to the Old Westbury campus last May as an inspiring guest speaker at the Class of 2022's White Coat Ceremony. We love this recent profile about her on The Box.
Alumni Profile: Samantha Snukis | Box | New York Tech
Athletic Promise Samantha Snukis (M.S. ’14) is competitive by nature, and though the competition was fierce while searching for the right physician assistant studies (PA) program, she was barely deterred. Today, her role as PA reflects her career in sports and vice versa. A triathlete, Snukis has ...

The Effects of Pandemic Stress on Academic Success.
Students are currently struggling with their academic performance and pandemic stress may have a role in it.
Pandemic stress, like all serious stress, produces surges of cortisol, which activates fight-or-flight responses that can interfere with focus, concentration, and decision making. Beyond the initial shock, the relentless drumbeat of news, statistics, and minute-by-minute crisis reminders heightens our sensitivity to pandemic-related information.
Even among some people who haven’t had Covid-19, this has resulted in what is loosely described by many as “Covid brain.” Moreover, for college students in their late teens and early 20s, this is happening as their brains are still developing.
Whether students are experiencing sporadic distractions or debilitating obsessions, these patterns have led to an avalanche of need for mental-health services for an already maxed out industry. Many colleges are watchful, wary, and bracing themselves for students’ psychological aftershocks. The Chronicle report, Building Students' Resilience, provides advice on how faculty can acknowledge these struggles, share appropriate resources, and reengage their classes.

NYS Governor Kathy Hochul announced this morning that the number of COVID-19 cases has now made it "almost impossible to do contact tracing" so this process will be suspended. This announcement was backed up by the Acting New York Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett who further stated that the Department of Health will now switch its efforts towards self-management by NYS residents and a Departmental focus on testing and vaccinations for COVID-19.
New York State plans on implementing this new approach on Wednesday 1/12/2022 while providing continue guidance and support for workers and their employers.
Does this mean we are winning or losing the battle against COVID? Any opinions?
