I’d say the “Join or Die” ruck was a success! 3.2 miles, 11 participants, 160lbs of sand…and the mosquitos were well fed!

Today is the “Join or Die” ruck. In recognition of the Benjamin Franklin political cartoon depicting a snake cut into multiple sections, intended to encourage the colonies to join the cause for independence, we will carry a “snake” of sandbags connected by carabiners over a 3 mile route. It looks like a great morning for a walk through the woods!

We were concerned about the weather, but it cooperated and we had a great ruck and learned a lot about the City of Old Town. .

“Give me liberty, or give me death!” Those famous words from Patrick Henry were the inspiration for today’s ruck. Fifteen participants met as the chilly dawn broke to step off on a short 3 miler that would test their patriotic knowledge. Every half mile we stopped and challenged someone to choose “Liberty”, or “Death”. If liberty was chosen, they were asked a patriotic trivia question about subjects such as the U.S. Constitution. If they answered correctly, the march continued; if they were incorrect the group had to perform a short workout. I’m happy to report that only two of six questions were answered incorrectly. Everyone finished and earned their Liberty or Death patch Overall, it was a great way to start a Wednesday morning!
