It was an absolute pleasure to have Alicia Ponzio teaching a figure sculpture workshop last week!

Students began working on 24-inch clay figures from life on wire armatures using oil-based clay. They loosened up with quick sketches from several 30-minute poses and then worked through Alicia’s three-stage method of figure modeling, focusing on proportions, maximizing the gesture, finding the contours, and realizing the full three-dimensionality of the form.

The culmination of a year spent learning to see, measure, and build form.

For their final long pose, our First Year Core Drawing students worked on toned, shellacked paper with graphite and white chalk, bringing together a year of careful observation, patience, revision, and an increasingly confident understanding of structure and form.

An excellent finish to their first year, and a strong foundation to carry with them as they head into painting. ⚡️

Open Sunday sessions bring students and faculty together for extra hours from life, working side by side in the medium of their choice. A chance to spend more time at the easel, exchange ideas, and see how different artists approach the same sitter.
