Here’s a flashback to one of our faculty demos last June, with Co-Artistic Director AMAYA GURPIDE drawing with graphite and white chalk on paper. The paper was mounted on a panel and toned with gouache. Over three sessions, she built up the values working with both masses and linear hatching.

These sessions are so valuable for our students, as they offer an opportunity to see each faculty member’s unique way of approaching their work.

Have you ever wondered how casts are made? Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at student teacher Elizabeth Conway demonstrating the process, from mixing plaster to preparing the mold to pouring.

Students can borrow these casts from our collection to draw, or buy them in our on-campus store de Gerenday’s . They can also learn to pour them on our casting team.

First week back means faculty demos. 🗿 Chad Fisher Sculpture built this figure from the model in just three hours, and students watched each form take shape as he worked.

Seeing an experienced sculptor translate observation into clay in real time is a lesson no lecture can match. With a year of hands-on sculpting and drawing ahead, it’s the perfect start.

How does it feel to start your painting year? Our former first-year students are back in the studio, having their first week of painting, pre-mixing their grisaille, working on a one-day pose…the energy is in the air! And as Artistic Director Jordan Sokol says in class, “Once you really understand how to paint, you can paint anything!”
