Something new at Beyond the Books this fall:

If your high schooler is juggling sports, activities, homework, and everything else that comes with the school year, you know how hard it can be to commit to the same one-on-one time each week. That's exactly why I created Study Hall.

It's a flexible, drop-in membership; students can pop in Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm whenever they need help, whether that's homework support, essay help, SAT prep, or just a focused space to get things done. No set schedule, no attendance tracking, just consistent access to support on their terms.

It's $175 a month for unlimited access to any of those sessions, and I'm keeping this first round small, just 10 students, so I can ensure everyone receives real support as we pilot the format. A few scholarship spots are also available for qualifying families.

Real talk, parents... what does homework time actually look like in your house?

Is it mostly smooth sailing? A daily negotiation? A full production involving snacks, tears, and three different reminders to put the phone down?

I ask because I work with families across the whole spectrum, and I promise there is no wrong answer here. What I’ve learned is that every family has their version of the homework battle, and most of them feel like they’re the only ones.

One of the things I love most about my work is that it gives parents permission to just be parents again. The academic heavy lifting happens with me, outside the classroom, so that home can feel a little more like home.

Summer reading is one of those things that can feel like a chore or it can be the thing that genuinely changes how your student thinks and writes. The difference usually comes down to one thing: are they reading actively or just getting through pages?

One day it feels like something you’ll deal with later, and the next it’s October, and your child is staring at a blank page with three other deadlines competing for their attention.

Summer changes all of that. Here’s why it’s genuinely the best time to start:

✨ Reflection requires space. The best college essays don’t come from students who sat down and wrote something impressive on the first try. They come from students who had time to actually think about who they are and what they want to say. That kind of reflection is almost impossible to find in the middle of a busy school year, and summer is one of the only times it’s truly available.

✏️ Voice takes time to develop. Admissions officers read thousands of essays. The ones that stand out sound like a real person, not a polished performance. Finding that authentic voice requires multiple drafts and time in between them, something fall simply doesn’t allow when every deadline feels urgent.

🌞 Summer experiences make the best material. A job, a trip, a volunteer experience, a conversation that shifted their thinking, the things that happen this summer might be exactly what the essay ends up being about. Students who start early can weave in real, recent experiences that feel alive on the page in a way that nothing else can replicate.

I know first-hand the pressure a child can place on themselves to meet the expectations of the world around them. Growing up, I worried about being a straight-A student to the point of physical exhaustion and social isolation. I believed I wasn't worthy unless I met every expectation placed on me.

I've since learned how to break free from that, and it changed everything about how I show up for my students. The methodologies I use aren't just about academics; they're about helping students build confidence, resilience, and a sense of identity they're proud of, alongside their success in the classroom.
