๐Ÿฆƒ Episode 82 of The Art of Adjustingยฎ Podcast Giving Thanks (and Adjusting Attitudes) drops Thursday, November 20 at 8 AM ET! ๐Ÿฆƒ

Right before this clip, Bill and I were knee-deep in exclusionsโ€ฆ and he brought up bad cooking. ๐Ÿ‘€

Naturally, I had to defend myself.
Yes, my cooking would be covered โ€” because if thereโ€™s smoke or fire, thatโ€™s a covered peril, thank you very much. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿงฏ

And the best part?
Bill AGREED with me.
(Smart man. Or tired man. Weโ€™ll never know.)

If youโ€™ve ever handled:
๐Ÿ”ฅ A turkey-fryer catastrophe
๐Ÿฒ A casserole gone rogue
๐Ÿฅ˜ โ€œExperimental seasoningโ€ that turned into a claim
โ€ฆthis advert is for you.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Insurance fam โ€” tell me:
Whatโ€™s the wildest holiday cooking claim youโ€™ve seen?
Would my cooking be covered? Be honest. ๐Ÿ˜…

Tag the adjuster who ALWAYS gets the grease-fire claims. ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ€œInsurers get rich by denying claims.โ€
Sure โ€” right before they get sued, fined, and dragged through DOI hearings.
Itโ€™s not a business plan โ€” itโ€™s a breakdown.
Training, oversight, processโ€ฆ thatโ€™s where things fail.
Underpaying claims doesnโ€™t make anyone rich. It makes everyoneโ€™s job harder.

11/13/2025

โ€œInsurers underpay claims to make shareholders rich.โ€
Sure. And lighting your own stock price on fire is great for investors. ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Underpaying might look smart on paper, but itโ€™s a long-term disaster โ€” lawsuits, fines, churn, and reputation damage.
Itโ€™s not a strategy. Itโ€™s self-sabotage.

11/12/2025

Somebody said insurers underpay claims to make their owners rich.
Cool theory. But in mutuals, youโ€™re the owner.
Soโ€ฆ congrats? You just underpaid yourself. ๐Ÿ˜

11/10/2025

I keep seeing โ€œinsurers underpay claims to make owners rich.โ€
Nope.
And before anyone says โ€œitโ€™s the CEOs!โ€ โ€” look at Apple, Amazon, or literally any Fortune 500.
Thatโ€™s not an insurance issue, thatโ€™s capitalism, my friends.

๐ŸŽฏ Think your home insurance deductible is $1,000?
It might actually be $25,000.

Welcome to the world of percentage deductibles โ€” where your out-of-pocket cost isnโ€™t a numberโ€ฆ itโ€™s a math problem. ๐Ÿ’ธ

โš ๏ธ Wind. Hail. Hurricanes. These disasters often trigger higher deductibles than you think.

(Sound on)
๐Ÿ›‘ Did you know one poorly set reserve could shake an entire insurance company?

In our latest episode of The Art of Adjustingยฎ Podcast, Sandy and I talk about something every adjuster needs to understand: the difference between bankruptcy, insolvency, and reservesโ€”and how your daily decisions can impact a carrierโ€™s financial future.

We cover:
โœ”๏ธ What happens when a company runs out of money (and why itโ€™s not always โ€œbankruptcyโ€)
โœ”๏ธ Why adjusters play a bigger role in solvency than they realize
โœ”๏ธ The stair-stepping trap (you know what we mean)
โœ”๏ธ What AI is getting wrong about reserves
โœ”๏ธ And why states like Florida are every carrierโ€™s headache

Whether youโ€™re new to claims or a seasoned pro, this oneโ€™s for you. Itโ€™s practical, eye-opening, and surprisingly fun. (Yes, thereโ€™s a SpongeBob reference. No, weโ€™re not sorry.)

You didnโ€™t get scammed โ€” you hit an exclusion. ๐Ÿ’ฅAs a former adjuster, Iโ€™ve seen it all: mold? Not covered. Sewer backup? Nope. That pipe you didnโ€™t know was about to burst? Denied.Itโ€™s not personal. Itโ€™s how insurance works.Hereโ€™s what exclusions actually are โ€” and how to stop getting caught off guard. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Star Wars Month isn't over yet, and neither is Empire Insurance Mutual!

The saga continues in the Outer Rim... in our last episode, we uncovered misrepresentation at the Skywalker farm.

Now, weโ€™re headed back to the galaxy of coverage concernsโ€”this time, itโ€™s the Statement of Values. Chantal finds something new at the insured location, but Sandy isnโ€™t surprised.

The original claim isn't about the solar panels.

Because ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘’๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘Ž ๐‘”๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘‘ ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก๐‘›๐‘’๐‘Ÿ to the other departments and to the ultimate concern-- the policyholder. You don't want to write that denial letter when you could have saved them some heartache by having the missing item listed on the DEC Sheet or SOV. So, when you see something at the insured's property that's not listed on the DEC or SOV, let the agent know. Likewise, if you see that the insured says they have something (like a burglar alarm) on the policy, but they don't have one in real life, let the agent know.

This is the insurance version of

These are the ๐ฌ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ that will help you be out of this world (see what I did there?).

05/23/2025

You asked for itโ€ฆ ๐„๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ strikes back.

In the prequel, you saw Adjuster Chantal and Agent Sandy deny the Death Starโ€” er, "Planet Protector."

In this episode, the Skywalkers claimed their water tank was rated for a two-sun planet.

Because if the rating was wrong, it's misrepresentationโ€”and that could void the policy.

Void doesnโ€™t mean denied.

It means ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™ก๐™ž๐™˜๐™ฎ ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง ๐™š๐™ญ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™. Premium refunded. Claim? Gone.

Thatโ€™s why agents can be powerful alliesโ€”when they speak up.

Determining the monetary value of your cryptocurrency loss is the hardest part of potentially insuring these currencies. Because cryptocurrency is not backed by a government or tied to a physical asset, it can be volatile.
