This visual is based on Nancy Young’s Ladder of Reading and Writing, which brings together decades of reading research.
The key message is simple but powerful:
Reading is not a natural process. It must be taught.
📚 Only a small percentage learn easily.
📚 The majority need explicit and systematic instruction.
📚 And a significant group needs specialized, intensive support.
In other words, what works for a few does not work for most.
