Phase 2: Breaking Ground

Before the plants go in, we have to build the right foundation!

We started by breaking ground and thoroughly tilling each area to loosen the compacted soil. Next came plenty of hand-w**ding to remove the grass, roots and unwanted growth that could compete with the new plants.

Once the beds were cleared and prepared, we top-dressed them with organic compost-enriched garden ready soil from Minick Materials . This adds nutrients and organic matter while improving the soil’s structure, moisture retention and overall growing environment.

Healthy gardens begin below the surface. Taking the time to properly prepare the soil gives these future pollinator patches and the backyard vegetable garden a nutrient-dense foundation for long-term success.

Next up: bringing these spaces to life with plants!

Here’s the before of our latest backyard refresh!

The existing flowerbeds out front are getting a fresh start and will soon become colorful pollinator patches designed to provide food and habitat for bees, butterflies and other beneficial visitors. 🦋

In the backyard, we’re also turning an unused strip of lawn along the fence into a productive in-ground garden bed. Going directly into the ground keeps the project cost-effective while still creating plenty of space for the homeowners to grow fresh vegetables, herbs and more.

These spaces may look a little bare right now, but just wait until you see what they become! Follow along for the finished transformation.

One month old already—and growing way too fast!

Our four little ladies recently had their first adventures outside, where they scratched through the grass, chased bugs, stretched their wings and explored every corner they could find. It didn’t take long for them to settle right into chicken life!

Their personalities are already starting to shine, and those fluffy little chicks are quickly turning into beautiful young hens. We can’t wait to watch them grow—but can they stay this little just a bit longer?

Less mud in the yard means fewer muddy paw prints in the house!

This downspout was releasing water directly into the backyard, creating a muddy area that the dogs were more than happy to track indoors.

We installed an underground drain line to carry that water away from the yard, routed it beneath the fence and finished it with a 9” x 9” catch basin outside the backyard for a clean, controlled exit.

It’s a fairly simple drainage improvement that can make a huge difference—less standing water, less mud and a much cleaner home after it rains!

Is water from your downspouts turning part of your yard into a muddy mess? Backyard Harvest Solutions can help create a drainage solution that works with your property.

Meet the four newest girls in our flock! 🐥

After losing a few of our birds during the extreme summer heat—and a couple of adventurous youngsters that hatched outside and were unfortunately taken by a predator—we decided it was time to bring a little new life into the flock.

We now have four new female chicks! Two are Cream Legbars, which should eventually give us some beautiful blue eggs. The other two were supposed to be Marans, but only one is currently sporting feathers on her feet…so their true identities remain a bit of a mystery.

For now, they’re settling in nicely, growing feathers by the day and already showing off their individual personalities. One has even discovered that a shoulder makes a pretty comfortable perch!

Any guesses about what our two mystery girls might be? And, more importantly, what should we name all four?

A big thank-you
After removing the old shrubs, clearing the w**ds and preparing the soil with organic compost, They donated 24 Oklahoma native plants to be placed throughout the flowerbeds at The House FM :

🌿 6 White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima)
🌾 6 Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)
💜 6 Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum)
🌱 6 Elephant’s Foot (Elephantopus tomentosus)

We also added several other pollinator-friendly favorites:

🌾 2 ‘Chameleon’ Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Chameleon’)
🌾 3 Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)
🦋 2 Butterfly Bushes (Buddleja davidii)
🌸 2 Purple Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea)
💜 2 Arkansas Ironw**ds (Vernonia arkansana)
🌺 1 Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)

The first 24 native plants were generously donated by Native Plant Nursery OKC. Thank you for helping make this pollinator-friendly transformation possible!

We finished the beds with a fresh layer of cedar mulch to help retain moisture, regulate the soil temperature and reduce future w**d growth.

The plants may look small today, but they’ll fill in over time and bring more color, texture and habitat for local bees, butterflies and other wildlife with every growing season.

A big thank-you to The House FM for trusting Backyard Harvest Solutions with this project. We can’t wait to watch these beds grow!

The messy middle is where the transformation really begins!

With the stubborn hollies out of the way, we moved on to preparing the flowerbeds at The House FM for their new native plants.

We removed all the old mulch, cleared out the w**ds and we have a few remaining shrubs to tend to. We brought in and spread organic compost to give the new plants healthier soil to grow in.

It may look empty right now, but these freshly prepared beds are ready to come alive with native plants, seasonal color and plenty of support for local pollinators.

Planting / Mulching day is next—stay tuned for the transformation!

Those holly bushes did NOT want to leave. 😅🌳

We removed four mature hollies to make room for a brand-new native plant garden at —and let’s just say they kicked my butt every step of the way!

Deep roots, stubborn stumps and plenty of digging made this one a battle. The hollies may have won a few rounds, but we eventually won the fight.

Now the beds are opened up and one step closer to becoming a colorful, pollinator-friendly native landscape. Stay tuned for the transformation!

A new look is coming to !

We’re reworking the flowerbeds around the station to create a more colorful, welcoming landscape filled with native plants that will support local pollinators for years to come. 🐝🦋

The first step was making room! We plan to remove:

4 mature holly bushes
10 boxwoods
The existing black mulch

With the old shrubs cleared, these beds are ready for their transformation. Stay tuned to see the native plants we selected and the finished result!

A big thank-you to The House FM for trusting Backyard Harvest Solutions with this special project. We’re excited to help create a landscape that gives back to the community and the ecosystem!

45 DAYS OLD—and getting so big!

It’s hard to believe Momma Benny’s babies were tiny fluffballs just six weeks ago. Their feathers are filling in, their personalities are coming out, and they’re becoming more adventurous every day!

Fun chick facts at 45 days old:

• Most of their fluffy down has been replaced by real feathers.
• They can regulate their body temperature much better than newborn chicks.
• Their individual personalities—and place in the flock—are already beginning to develop.
• Around this age, chicks often start becoming more independent from Momma Hen…although they still follow her when treats are involved! 😂

Momma Benny & Dominque has done an incredible job raising these two. Which chick do you think will eventually rule the roost? 👇
