Yesterday, Sigma Sigma Omega hosted our Founders’ Day Celebration, themed “Petals of Legacy… Honoring Sisterhood & Service.”
Flowers do not bloom alone. Each petal is connected, each layer intentional, each bloom the result of deep roots and careful cultivation. That is the beauty of sisterhood.
Our Founders planted seeds of scholarship, service, and sisterly love in 1908, and because of their vision, we continue to bloom generation after generation. Their courage became our roots. Their excellence became our standard. Their legacy continues to blossom through us.
A very special moment of our celebration was honoring our newest Silver Stars, sisters who have faithfully served Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for 25 years:
- Mrs. Amelia Billingslea
- Dr. DeKisha Carter
- Mrs. Tamya Cox-Toure
- Mrs. Angela Griffis
- Dr. Amber Wiley
These remarkable women represent resilience, grace, and unwavering commitment. They are living petals in our garden of sisterhood, nurturing those around them and ensuring that our chapter continues to flourish.
We also took time to recognize chapter members who have gone above and beyond for Sigma Sigma Omega, sisters whose quiet dedication, tireless service, and steadfast love continue to strengthen our foundation. Their work may not always be seen publicly, but it is deeply felt throughout our chapter.
In sisterhood, we grow together.
In service, we bloom boldly.
In legacy, we remain forever rooted.
Here’s to the petals that came before us, the blooms among us, and the generations still to blossom.

This week, Sigma Sigma Omega proudly honors and celebrates the life and legacy of Alice Walker, a literary giant, cultural truth teller, and fearless activist.
Born in rural Georgia, Walker rose above the barriers of segregation and a childhood injury to become her high school valedictorian and a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College. Her journey reflects resilience, brilliance, and unwavering determination.
In 1982, she made history as the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her groundbreaking novel The Color Purple. Through her writing, she gave voice to Black women’s stories with honesty, depth, and power.
Beyond literature, Walker has long been a champion for justice. A participant in the Civil Rights Movement, she introduced and uplifted the concept of “womanism” to center the experiences of women of color. Her advocacy has also extended to peace efforts and animal rights, demonstrating her deep commitment to humanity and compassion.
Her words continue to move us:
“Activism is my rent for living on this planet.”
Today, we celebrate a Shero whose pen became a platform, whose courage shifted culture, and whose legacy reminds us that service, truth, and sisterhood matter.
Happy Birthday, Alice Walker. 💕💚
With love,
Sigma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Sigma Sigma Omega Chapter was truly blessed to serve at Positive Tomorrows as part of our “AKA Day of Service.”
Our sisters had the opportunity to engage directly with students through meaningful lessons centered on the life, legacy, and ongoing work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helping young minds understand the importance of service, justice, leadership, and love for community. The conversations were powerful, heartfelt, and deeply affirming for both the students and our members.
In addition to educational engagement, we were proud to donate ethnic hair care products to support the students of Positive Tomorrows, affirming their identity, confidence, and self-care. These donations were made with intention, recognizing that dignity and representation matter at every stage of a child’s journey.
The warmth, gratitude, and joy shared throughout the day reminded us exactly why we serve. The impact was felt on all sides, and we left inspired, energized, and grateful for the opportunity to pour into such an incredible community. This experience was a true reflection of service in action and sisterhood at work.
