is a nonprofit organization that provides services for children with and without special needs while promoting acceptance and the belief that children are children first. Funding is received through the United Way, various foundation grants, reimbursement programs, corporations, and individual contributions. Special Care is licensed to serve more than 200 children between the ages of 6 weeks to 21 years. Two thirds of the children enrolled at Special Care have special needs. Some of the physical and multi-disabling challenges our students
face are Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Autism, and many other disabilities. The Special Care program is available Monday through Friday from 7am to 6pm. In addition, before and after-school programs are available for school-age children; summer and holiday programs are also available. Inclusive classrooms and on-site therapy services offer opportunities for children of all abilities to reach their full potential. Families thrive too because of the support and community they experience at Special Care.

At Special Care, inclusion is at the heart of our mission. Every day, our teachers, therapists, and staff work incredibly hard to serve children with a wide range of abilities and individual needs. We want to serve every child we can, while also recognizing that no single program can meet every need.

We know we cannot be all things to all people. But for so many children and families, Special Care is a place of belonging, support, growth, and possibility. We are incredibly proud of that—and of the people who make it possible every day.

There are limited circumstances when Special Care may determine that we can no longer safely or appropriately serve a student. These can include ongoing peer-to-peer aggression that places others at risk, behavioral, emotional, or mental health needs that exceed the level of care and support our program is equipped to provide, or significant violations of our Parent Code of Conduct.

A decision to end a child’s enrollment is never made lightly. These are incredibly difficult decisions made only after careful consideration of the individual child and our responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of the other children and staff entrusted to our care. We also recognize that these decisions can be extremely difficult for families, particularly when they strongly disagree with them.

This year, Special Care made the difficult decision to end the enrollment of a student. Following that decision, allegations were filed against Special Care with the appropriate authorities. As should happen whenever concerns about a child’s care are raised, those allegations were taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. Special Care cooperated fully throughout that process.

After exhaustive investigations, both claims were conclusively determined to be entirely unsubstantiated.

Despite those findings, false allegations about Special Care and individual members of our team have continued to be shared publicly. Employees have been named and photographs of our teachers have been posted. Most troubling to us, photographs of our employees’ own children have also been shared in connection with these claims.

This is unacceptable, and we are incredibly saddened by what members of our team and their families have been asked to endure.

We are also aware that these allegations have prompted additional commentary from some former families and former employees who have had difficult separations from Special Care, including circumstances involving the end of a child’s enrollment or an individual’s employment. We recognize that decisions like these can be painful, disappointing, and strongly disagreed with. They are also decisions that Special Care does not make lightly.

Disagreement with a difficult enrollment or employment decision does not change our responsibility to make decisions necessary to protect the safety, well-being, and integrity of our school community.

We will not publicly discuss the confidential circumstances of any current or former student, family, or employee. As a result, there may be claims made publicly to which Special Care cannot provide a detailed response. We hope our community understands that our commitment to confidentiality should not be mistaken for confirmation of those claims.

We have every confidence in our teachers and staff. They come to work every day committed to meeting children where they are and doing extraordinarily challenging and important work with patience, compassion, skill, and dedication. We stand firmly behind our team and the work they do for children every day.

Until now, we have remained largely silent because this situation involves a child and family we served. Even when allegations about Special Care are made publicly, our responsibility to respect the privacy and confidentiality of that child and family remains. Our commitment to confidentiality, however, should not be mistaken for agreement with false allegations or an unwillingness to stand up for our employees.

Given the continued publication of false, libelous, and defamatory statements about Special Care and members of our team, we are working with legal counsel and the appropriate authorities to address this matter. We are incredibly grateful that our attorney has volunteered his time to help us navigate this situation and take appropriate steps to protect Special Care, our employees, and their families.

We understand that seeing allegations like these on social media can be concerning. If you have questions about Special Care, our policies, or the care we provide, we encourage you to come directly to us. We welcome those conversations and will share everything we appropriately can while continuing to respect the confidentiality of every child and family we serve.

We are incredibly proud of our team and grateful for the families and community who entrust us with their children each day. Our focus remains where it has always been: providing a safe, inclusive, compassionate place where children of all abilities can learn, grow, and belong.

Last week, we celebrated two truly incredible longtime Special Care students as they completed their final lap through our halls as students at Special Care. Savannah has been part of the Special Care School Family for 16 years, and Christian for 22 years.

One of our most meaningful traditions is the Special Care Clap Out. Students, teachers, therapists, staff, families, and friends line the halls to cheer, clap, celebrate, and honor these remarkable graduates as they make their final lap through the halls of Special Care. There were smiles, tears, hugs, and so much joy as we celebrated the impact Savannah and Christian have had on our school and on all of us fortunate enough to know them.

Savannah and Christian, thank you for letting us be part of your lives. You will always be part of the Special Care Family and we will love you always!!!!
