How to Read to an Infant
Posted: 20 Feb 2014 04:30 PM PST
You rock and sing to them, play with their little finger and toes, smile into their sweet faces–but do you read to your infant? While it may seem inconsequential, reading to infants serves as an important aspect of their development.

Your little one benefits greatly from being read to on a regular basis. The following lists some of the main reasons:

Improved communication
Higher level of literacy
Stronger development of listening, memory, and vocabulary skills
Stronger social development
Builds emotional development
Builds stronger relationship between the parent and child
Provides information about the world
How to Read to an Infant

The requirements are few–just you, your baby, and a few books! There’s no need to worry about getting through the whole book or making sure you read every word as it’s written. Just take time to enjoy the process of reading together, enjoying the colors and shapes, using different sound effects, even reading the same page over and over again if it’s a favorite!

When to Read:
Bedtime is always a great option for reading time. Not only is it a fun way to close the day, but as your baby begins to associate story time with bedtime, getting baby to sleep can be a lot easier of a task! However, don’t rule out reading at other times of the day. Taking advantage of times when they’re alert and active can be a very exciting and especially enjoyable time to read with your infant as he or she can be more interactive.
