I SUPPORT OKLAHOMA TEACHERS

The average public school teacher in the United States earned $74,495 last school year, up 3.5% from the year before, according to a new report from the National Education Association, the country's largest teachers union. On paper, that looks like steady progress. Adjusted for inflation, it isn't.

NEA researchers compared today's salaries to 2017 figures using state education department projections, and found that after accounting for inflation, teachers' real earnings have actually declined by nearly 5% over the decade. New teachers have it a little better but not by much: the average starting salary nationally rose 3.4% last year to $48,112, but real growth after inflation was below 1%. "Dedicated educators show up every day in classrooms across this country to inspire, support, and lift up their students, but too many are struggling to stay in the profession they love," NEA President Becky Pringle said.
