We have a Red Dot Transition class coming on March 25th. It's a full 8 hour day of training where we will shoot about 400 rounds.

This is a great option for someone looking to transition from irons to a pistol mounted red dot, but it's also a fun day of training for someone who is already comfortable with their RDS. We will get lots of reps in and the class material is revamped for 2026 with some updates and focus on a few areas we haven't previously focused on in this class, such as finding the dot after movement.

Check out the website for other training we offer.

I was recently involved in a situation where I had no choice but to chase a suspect armed with a rifle. During that incident he began to turn towards me and I had to decelerate, present my pistol, and be ready to shoot.

During my personal debrief of that incident I realized I had done that same process hundreds of times while shooting USPSA.

If you are carrying a gun, and even more so if you are instructing others you need to be training fast movement and deceleration while presenting a firearm.
These are real skills that need to be trained and tested!
Check out greensdefensivesolutions.com for upcoming classes where we rep these exact skills.

Train today so that when you are faced with a life and death scenario you have the mental, physical, and technical skills to cover the withdrawal.

When Phil talks about movement it's always worth a read!

Our Red Dot Transition class is offered in two variations, an 8 hour and a 16 hour version.

The classes are very similar and day one of the 16 hours mimics the 8 hour class closely. We understand many small departments may not be able to afford the manpower loss and the cost of a 16 hour 2 day class so we offer the 8-hour with prescribed dryfire routines and continuing practice to fill in the gaps that the 2 day course covers.

Both courses discuss the "why" of the red dot and we briefly touch on brands, mounting options, and maintaining the dot.
We then start pulling the trigger with zeroing, and we work into finding the dot on presentation from holster. The rest of the course gets into using the red dot effectively and we cover how to deal with a dot failure. The one day course we will shoot about 450 rounds and the two day we shoot about 800.

Both are great options for an officer who is already effective with iron sights and wants to make the transition.

Something that I have believed for a while, and practiced before I actually put it in words is my "3 Pistol theory ".
The gist of it is that if you are a serious practitioner of defensive pistol shooting and you carry all the time you need three pistols that share the same manual of arms. I don't care what brand you choose, but the goal is that training with one should carry over to the other two and they should all be comfortable enough to shoot you will train with them all. Here are what I believe is important with each.

1. Big fighting pistol- This should be a full sized gun, heavy, with a light, and minimum magazine capacity of 17. Rarely if ever would you carry this concealed. Examples-G***k 17, M&P 2.0, Staccato P, Staccato HD 4 or 4 5.

2. Big concealed pistol- This should be a nice mid sized gun, could do the duty role if needed but small enough to carry in most clothes. Something that is fun to train with and minimum magazine capacity of 13-15. Examples- G***k 19, M&P compact, Staccato C2, Staccato CS or 3.6.

3. Small Concealed Pistol- This should be the smallest pistol you are willing to train with regularly and a gun you can conceal 95% of the time. Minimum capacity should be 10 rounds. Examples- G***k 48, M&P Shield, Smith CSX

With those three guns you can meet almost all your pistol needs. There is probably a place for a small back up gun too, but I think too many people get a small 5 or 6 shot gun and carry it because it's convenient even though they rarely train with it.

Pictured above are my Staccato 4.5, Staccato 3.6, and Smith CSX.

Let me hear your thoughts.
