There is a transition period for children coming to Chisholm Creek Academy, we call it ’Traditional School Detox’. Coming to this school can be difficult, challenging, and unique. We are asking kids to rewire the parts of their brain where they look to adults for answers. We have found that there is roughly one month of transition per year that a Learner has been in traditional school. We are willing to meet each child where they are as long as they are willing to put in the effort required. Socrates had a habit of questioning everything. It didn’t always make him popular and his relentless pursuit of truth ultimately led to his death. But we believe he was onto something: Questioning is how we uncover true wisdom. At our school, we aren’t focused solely on the answer a Learner gives. We’re interested in the reasoning behind it. In traditional school, grades are often used to measure how well a student has mastered a subject. But what happens when a student earns anything below an ‘A’? The school year moves on. The next unit begins. The student is expected to keep up, whether they truly understand the material or not. We believe students deserve better. We don’t believe that learning should be dictated by a calendar or a grade. Our Learners are given the time and space to truly understand, practice, and master a concept before moving forward. We do this by using a Badge Plan. This system is a way to recognize progress and demonstrated mastery along each Learner’s journey.
