Friends, I saw this graphic on KFOR today while watching the news. Edibles THC products are converted by the liver to a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC, which is roughly 4 times more potent than THC. I have several pharmacist friends who work at Oklahoma Poison Control who I am sure would like me to get the word out.

While many adults just get uncomfortably anxious, or extremely sleepy, unintentional ingestion by children can cause bradycardia (low heart rate), difficulty in breathing (sometimes requiring mechanical ventilation) and other serious side effects. My Canna Pharmacist friend Codi Peterson is also a pediatric ER pharmacist in CA and sees this with some frequency.

I’m all for making it easier to gradually wean off of opioids using suboxone or methadone. Opioid withdrawal symptoms can be intense, and are indeed a major reason to go back to using them. I applaud what is being done here. However, there are other ways besides using an opioid.

Cannabis can also be used to block the severity of opioid withdrawal symptoms. And, unlike opioids, there is no risk of respiratory depression. Yet many lawmakers are still living in the “reefer madness” prohibition era. Many Oklahoma federally elected officials fall into this category, some even voting “No” on cannabis RESEARCH bills. One has a son who experienced a brain injury (cannabinoids MAY be effective in helping these patients through reduction in neuroinflammation and for their anti-oxidant properties.) Have you ever walked into a forest full of pine trees and noticed that you felt like you could breathe better? These effects are due to the terpene alpha-pinene. This is a good "daytime" terpene. It is also reported to decrease the memory loss (temporary) which can sometimes be a side effect of THC. While I prefer to look at strains by terpene content rather than name, common popular strains in which this occurs are Blue Dream, Strawberry Cough, Girl Scout Cookies (GSC), Jack Herer, Harlequin, and OG Kush. Always ask your dispensary professional to see a certificate of analysis or ask them to show you terpene content.

This is another terpene that makes it a good choice for "after work" use, especially for sleep since it tends to be the most sedating. It is in lavender, and is calming/relaxing to most people. It is no wonder then that this terpene would possess those same properties in the cannabis plant.

I would like to see more research on its properties against bacteria and fungi. Antibiotic/antifungal medications are always in a race against the bacteria/fungus getting resistant to the medications.
