🦷🐴 Straight From the Mouth Monday 🐴🦷
This was a patient of mine from last week.
He is a 7 yr old quarter horse that was recently bought by my customers and wanted to have his mouth checked.
✅ SO glad they did! He had some MAJOR issues in his mouth! Sheila Hellams so glad we could get him functioning better and out of pain!♥️
🛑 #306 was extremely protuberant and causing some significant wear and damage to the opposing #206. He had a Rostral hook on #106, extremely sharp points causing ulcers in his cheeks/tongue, caudal hooks on #311/411 and other balance issues. To say the least this guys mouth was locking anterior/posterior and laterally and was sore in both TMJ joints!
✅ I reduced and balanced what I could today, but this will be a staged balanced over several visits!
Have a great week and get your horses yearly dental checkup done by a well educated professional!

It’s that time of the year -> hay baling has started! Make sure your hay for your horses is Fox Tail FREE!!
🛑 Foxtail and the damage it can cause! 🛑
People are going to be buying hay soon if not already to stock up for winter. Make sure your horse hay is free of Foxtail grass.
👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 - Ouch‼️ The grass is hair fine and gets embedded in the gum tissue around the front teeth, lips and under tongue.
Check your hay and find a well educated equine dental provider!!
Have a great week!

This is one of my patients today! This is such a great example of why yearly maintenance is so important.
A local trainer Johnny Fuerst got this horse in and knew he could see a lot of potential in the horse, but something was bothering him!
Here is what we found ⬇️
🛑 LARGE hooks on 103/203 incisors (front teeth) - completely locking Anterior/Posterior movement needed for collection and eating.
🛑 He had a lower wolf tooth #405 (not super common) located on the tongue side of the first molar. This can cause all kinds of things to happen- pinching tongue, pinching tissue between it and the tooth or a bit, sharp to the tongue when eating!
❗️This should have been taken out as a c**t - he is 15❗️
🛑 He also had several Caudal Hooks on his lower 311/411, VERY sharp and some balance correction.
I did not get pictures of everything, but I did of the wolf tooth and the front to show how it can start there.
‼️ - This is something EVERYONE can check for. Just lift up the lip to see the front teeth on the side and see if you notice if the teeth come together or if the top tooth is overlapping the tooth on the lower! ‼️
Find a good well educated equine dentist to show you your horses mouth and to navigate through the best care and treatment!
Have a good week

‼️ Let’s talk about the DIFFERENCE between CANINE teeth and WOLF teeth! ‼️
These teeth often are confused with each other!
🔶 CANINES are usually only found in male horses as these are their fighting teeth in the wild, but not completely unusual for a female horse to have them. If they do they will be much smaller.
➡️ - Canines are located in front of the bars of the horses mouth where the bit would sit.
➡️ - Canines that are over grown can make it difficult putting the bit in the mouth without hitting them. If canines are hit with the bit when putting the bit in the mouth or taking it out can make the horse very irritable and refuse the bit in some cases.
➡️ - Canines have the longest root in the mouth and DO NOT need to be extracted, unless there is trauma or a specific issue.
🔴 WOLF TEETH 🔴
➡️ - A premolar that is located in front of the first molar BEHIND the bars of the mouth.
➡️ - These teeth can cause alot of problems and discomfort when a bit is in the mouth. The bit can hit, rub or pinch tissue between them and the bit
➡️ - If your going to use a bit these teeth NEED to be REMOVED!
➡️ - Through the years I have heard of many ways of taking these teeth out. To often I here they (whoever) ‘knocked’ them out or they are broken off at gum line!! 🛑 THIS IS NOT GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM- the ENTIRE tooth and root needs to be removed!! 🛑
You can see in the picture how these roots can be curved making it more difficult to remove and NOT break the root off.
Find you a well educated equine dentist to remove these teeth!

❗️Let’s look at why it’s so IMPORTANT to have your c**ts (pictured 2 & 3 yr olds) seen by a trusted Equine Dental Provider - PRIOR- to having them started under saddle. ❗️
2yr olds: Have very sharp points along upper molars on the cheek side, as well as the tongue side of the lower molars. They can also have 0-4 wolf teeth.
3yr olds: Have ALOT going on 🔺sharp points just as the 2 yr olds have. 🔺Exfoliation of caps (baby teeth) have begun 1st molars 6’s should have shed or shedding along with 2nd molars 7’s. 🔺Eruption of new permanent molars in the very back (sharp to erupt through gum tissue) 🔺 Wolf teeth 0-4.
The 2yr old pictured has the Before/After
The 3yr old pictured has ALL the problems labels❗️
🛑 Take their mind out of their mouth and make the starting process more enjoyable. ❗️One can learn more when focused on a task rather than pain! ❗️
