Tuesday Tip:

Sight words or high frequency words are words that appear frequently in everyday text. These are words kids should recognize instantly without sounding them out. Recognizing sight words help kids become faster and more fluent readers.

Here are 5 easy steps to teach sight words:

1. Teach 3 words at a time. (I like Dolch word list)

2. Choose words that have something in common (an, and, after or by, been, but). For example, these words all start with the initial same letter and sound.

3. Have your child practice reading, spelling, and writing the words.

4. Have your child write and read sentences using each word.

5. Read books that contain the new sight words.

It’s important for children to be exposed to sight words in a variety of ways…games, flag cards and even worksheets are a great way to support your child learning new sight words.
