OSU-OKC Health Sciences was the location of the AAPC OKC Chapter’s Fall Seminar today. Since the chapter won Chapter of the Year 2025, the president of the AAPC, Raemarie Jimenez (and spouse) came the present at our conference from AAPC headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. Words cannot express how much of an honor it is that she came to visit the OSU-OKC Healthcare Management Department and our campus. Several of the departments advisory committee members were there too with some of our own graduates!

Medical coding for long, complex scenarios requires breaking down the patient chart into distinct components: the primary reason for the visit (diagnoses via ICD-10-CM), the specific procedures performed (services via CPT/HCPCS), and modifiers needed for accuracy.

Steps to Break Down a Long Scenario

Highlight key terms: Find the main diagnosis, symptoms, and specific anatomic sites.
Identify the encounter type: Determine if it is an Evaluation and Management (E/M) visit, outpatient surgery, or inpatient stay.
Separate diagnostics from procedures: Check if lab tests or X-rays are bundled or billed separately.
Check for modifiers: Look for side indicators (left/right), multiple procedures, or repeat services.

Core Coding Systems Used
ICD-10-CM: Captures the "why" (the medical diagnoses, signs, and symptoms).
CPT (Current Procedural Terminology): Captures the "what" (physician actions, surgeries, and evaluations).
HCPCS Level II: Captures supplies, injections, and durable medical equipment
