⚠️ Proposed Cuts to Instructional Coaches in Okemos Public Schools

What Parents Need to Know Before the Final Board Vote

βΈ»

πŸ“Š WHO DO INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES SUPPORT?

πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ“ 1,700+ Students

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« 150+ Teachers

🏫 Every Elementary School

πŸ“š Reading, Math, Intervention, Enrichment & MTSS Support

βΈ»

⭐ WHAT DO INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES DO?

Tier 1: Support for ALL Students

βœ… Help teachers improve instruction

βœ… Analyze student learning data

βœ… Differentiate lessons

βœ… Support struggling and advanced learners

βΈ»

Tier 2: Targeted Support

βœ… Identify students needing extra help

βœ… Coordinate reading and math interventions

βœ… Monitor student progress

βœ… Oversee state-required reading plans

βΈ»

Tier 3: Intensive Support

βœ… Coordinate individualized interventions

βœ… Collaborate with specialists and support teams

βœ… Support gifted and advanced learners

βœ… Align services for student success

βΈ»

🏫 Schoolwide Leadership

βœ… Lead school improvement efforts

βœ… Provide teacher training and coaching

βœ… Ensure interventions are effective

βœ… Help schools meet state and federal requirements

βΈ»

❌ WHAT HAPPENS IF THESE POSITIONS ARE CUT?

πŸ“‰ Less Support for Teachers

Teachers lose a dedicated partner who helps improve instruction and meet diverse student needs.

πŸ“‰ Weaker Academic Interventions

More than 250 students receive intervention support daily.
Without coaches, students may be identified later and receive less consistent support.

πŸ“‰ Increased Compliance Challenges

Michigan requires literacy screenings, dyslexia identification, reading improvement plans, and evidence-based interventions.

Instructional Coaches help schools meet these requirements.

πŸ“‰ Fewer Opportunities for Advanced Learners

Gifted and high-achieving students may receive less enrichment and challenge.

πŸ“‰ More Responsibility on Principals & Teachers

Coach responsibilities don’t disappearβ€”they shift to already stretched staff.

πŸ“‰ Less Schoolwide Coordination

Fewer data meetings, less consistency across classrooms, and reduced collaboration among educators.

βΈ»

🚨 WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

Okemos schools are preparing for:

πŸ“š New Reading Curriculum

βž— New Math Curriculum

πŸ“– Michigan Dyslexia Legislation Requirements

πŸ’° Literacy Coaching Expectations Linked to State Funding

Instructional Coaches play a critical role in helping schools successfully implement these changes.

βΈ»

❀️ THE BOTTOM LINE

Instructional Coaches are not an extra.

They help ensure every student receives timely support, every teacher has access to instructional expertise, and every school can meet growing academic expectations.

Eliminating these positions means less support for students, teachers, and schools.
