Every year for the past nine years Mr. Mendoza has been playing the bagpipes at our school in celebration of the Irish holiday, St. Patrick's Day. He wears the traditional uniform of a Scottish piper which includes a kilt.
More than 150 years ago the Irish and Scottish immigrated to America. Once here, these immigrants often took what were low paying, dangerous jobs like coal miners, firefighters, and policer officers.
One of the traditions these immigrants brought with them was playing the Great Highland bagpipes at weddings, dances, funerals and parties. That is why today, bagpipers are associated with fire and police departments.
Today marks the end of an era for this tradition at Meiners Oaks Elementary. We have been so honored to have this special treat year after year. Thank you Aimee and Dave for your time and dedication to our cubs.
