🌎 📚 Happy International Literacy Day!📚🌎

Literacy is the foundation upon which all learning is built, and its power to transform lives is limitless. Research shows that Structured Literacy Instruction is beneficial for all students and critical for some- particularly those with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. As educators, we have the profound responsibility to provide all students with the tools they need to succeed, and this starts with high-quality, evidence-based instruction.

Comprehensive Structured Literacy instruction goes beyond just teaching students to read; it encompasses phonemic awareness, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and orthography, ensuring a deep understanding of written language. It integrates reading comprehension with spelling and writing, using explicit, systematic, and interactive methods that are diagnostic and mastery-driven. This approach ensures that all students receive the review and feedback they need to build a solid foundation in literacy.

I am incredibly passionate about literacy and deeply committed to making an impact in this space. I believe that ongoing professional development and curriculum work are crucial in every school across our country. When educators are empowered with the right knowledge and tools, they can provide transformative learning experiences that meet the diverse needs of their students. Together, we can create a future where every child has the opportunity to become a confident, capable reader and writer!

Phew! Made it to the weekend! Nothing like back to school teacher tired. I swear, for me… the hardest part of my back-to-school routine is setting that 5am alarm clock. 🫣

I can’t tell you how excited I was to wake up slowly, enjoy coffee on the back porch with my hubs, and just relax. The weather feels crisp today and I’m so excited for fall weather! Today I’m getting ready to prep my intervention lesson interactive slideshows for September/October for my virtual students. What are YOU doing on this lovely Saturday?

✋🏼 Give your child as many opportunities to respond during intervention as possible. Often times teachers think, “I need a different intervention… this one isn’t working.” If a student is receiving intervention and the intervention doesn’t seem to be working, here are some things to consider:

⭐️ How many students are in the intervention group? The fewer the students, the more opportunities each child has to practice and demonstrate the skills you are working on. Group size matters.

⭐️ Who’s doing the work? Really think about this… if a child is struggling to sound out a word, are you quick to jump in and model sounding it out for them? It’s a natural response! I’ve been there. The more times you allow the child to practice retrieving those letter sounds and blending them together, the more opportunities that child has to commit those skills to long term memory. I’m not saying don’t model the skill. You should absolutely be explicitly teaching and modeling the skill, but when it is time for the child to apply those skills and respond… let them.

⭐️Private 1:1 reading intervention is a great way to ensure a child is not falling through the cracks and has ample opportunities to respond and practice the skills needed to become a proficient reader.
