This free story writing class, led by a children’s author and a published illustrator, is for children ages 8-10.

Last week, the featured book was Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. He is a world-renowned illustrator and author who created 40+ picture books, half of which he both wrote and illustrated. He’s celebrated for his minimalist design, which includes characters with stick legs, square bodies and few facial features.

At our next Kids Story Studio class on Wednesday June 17 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll chat about another minimalist illustrator, Jon Klassen. He strips his artwork down to the bare essentials. We’ll study this as we read I Want My Hat Back, a story about a polite bear who goes looking for his missing hat. The kids will draw the bear from this book.

Last week at Kids Story Studio, we read Roar! by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko. This "participation book"—about kids pretending to be lions—celebrates the joy of make-believe and invites young readers to join in with their loudest lion roars! The kids drew lions.

At our next class on Wednesday June 10 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll read Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. We’ll chat about “cumulative stories” in which each new event, character or object is added to the previous one. As the story proceeds, the list of things (like an orangutan) gets longer and wackier. At our last Kids Story Studio class, we read Bounce! by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko. We talked about how the author takes a mundane life moment and turns it into a hilarious, chaotic hospital adventure. The kids drew a girl bouncing into the air.

At our next class on Wednesday June 3 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll read Roar! by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko. Last week at Kids Story Studio, we read Smelly Socks by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko. We studied the text’s extreme exaggeration, like how the beavers fled the river when they smelled a girl’s stinky socks and went to live with her grandfather. The kids drew beavers.

At our next class on Wednesday May 27 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll read Bounce! by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko. We’ll chat about how the author takes a mundane life moment (a scraped knee) and turns it into an absurd, hilarious, chaotic hospital adventure. The kids will draw a girl bouncing into the air.

At our last Kids Story Studio class, we read The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Adam Rex. The rock, paper, and scissors characters helped kids learn about anthropomorphism, a technique authors use to make objects act, talk, or feel just like people. The kids drew a rock, paper, and scissors and gave them personalities.

At our next class on Wednesday May 20 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll read Smelly Socks by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Michael Martchenko. We’ll study the text's extreme exaggeration. The kids will draw a beaver that fled from the smelly socks!

Last week at Kids Story Studio, we read Some Smug Slug by Pamela Duncan Edwards, illustrated by Henry Cole, which teaches kids "alliteration"—the grouping of adjacent words that all start with the same beginning sound. We'll created sentences with alliteration and then drew slugs.

At our next class on Wednesday May 13 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll read The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt, Illustrated by Adam Rex. At last week’s Kids Story Studio class, we read a "fantasy" story titled When Dinosaurs Came with Everything by Elise Broach, illustrated by David Small. We defined a fantasy book and chatted about how such books often feature creatures we don't see in real life. The kids drew dinosaurs.

At our next class on Wednesday May 6 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we’ll read Some Smug Slug by Pamela Duncan Edwards, illustrated by Henry Cole. This book teaches kids alliteration, which is a group of adjacent words that all start with the same beginning sound. We'll practice creating sentences with alliteration and then draw slugs.

Last week at Kids Story Studio, we read See You Later, Alligator by Sally Hopgood, illustrated by Emma Levey. We discussed the book's "echo phrases," in which the second part of a sentence repeats the sound of the first part to create a rhyme. The kids drew tortoises.

At our next class on Wednesday April 29 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we'll read When Dinosaurs Came with Everything by Elise Broach, illustrated by David Small. In this “fantasy” book, dinosaurs come free with other purchases. We'll chat about what a fantasy book is and how such books often feature creatures we don't see in our neighborhoods. The kids will draw dinosaurs.

At last week’s Kids Story Studio class, we read Cinderella's Rat by Susan Meddaugh. This book is called a “Fractured Fairy Tale” because the Cinderella story is changed and told by the rat who was turned into a coachman. The kids drew rats.

At our next class on Wednesday April 22 at 4pm at the Chagrin Falls Library, we'll read See You Later, Alligator by Sally Hopgood. We'll discuss "echo phrases," where the second part of a sentence repeats the sound of the first part to create a rhyme. In this story, Tortoise uses lots of echo phrases to say goodbye. The kids will draw tortoises.

Last week at Kids Story Studio, we read A Giraffe and a Half by Shel Silverstein, a cumulative story that creates joy through silly humor. The kids drew giraffes, which if you visit the Kids Story Studio Art Exhibit at the Chagrin Falls Library, you’ll see displayed, along with several dozen other kids’ drawings. The exhibit lasts through the end of April.
