⬇️ How the electoral college works, in simple terms.
Scroll to the bottom for a puzzle! 🧩
Phase 1: The states vote.
Phase 2: The electors vote. Bigger states have more electors.
(See slide 3): Light orange won in 9 states. Teal won in 11 states. Orange won in 10 states. Blue won in 10 states. Purple won in 11 states.
Phase 3: The electors vote. Bigger states have more electors.
In orange states, only orange electors vote. In purple states, only purple electors vote. 🟠 Orange electors must vote for the orange candidate. 🟣 Purple electors must vote for the purple candidate. (And so on.)
💡A candidate who has won over more states might win...but without California, Texas, Florida, New York, etc., it is less likely.
What happens in a tie? 🤔
🏛️ The House of Representatives decides the outcome. This consists of one representative per state.

Intern Spotlight: Ava Elmore
“During the 2026 Utah Legislative Session, I had the opportunity to serve as a legislative intern in the office of Senator Ann Millner. Over the course of the seven-week session, I assisted with bill tracking, constituent communication, policy research, as well as other legislative responsibilities. This experience gave me knowledge about policy and lawmaking that I would have never learned elsewhere! My time at the Capitol was an incredibly rewarding experience and confirmed that public service and government are where I want to be.”
