Why am I running for school board?
So the short answer is that I am a mother to 4 children in our district so on a personal level I am invested in our education system here in Ogden.
I have found myself wanting to volunteer and help out wherever possible to ensure we are providing the best education available for all children.
(The long answer touches in alittle more on my involvement)
Over the past year I have volunteered at the elementary level with a wide range of things. The clothing closet & the book cart (both of which I would love to see us implement into the middle/high school level and I’ve been in touch with a school counselor to try and get that going) I’ve volunteered many hours in the library as the love for reading is such a key to student success.
I’ve also been involved with another Mom in our district trying to get our Elementary PTO back up and running but also thriving. (Again something I would LOVE to see happen at the midde/high schools as well)
I believe student success greatly depends on parents involvement in their education and I am dedicated to being hands on and helping anywhere it’s needed.
“Reading Buddy” is a program I am currently trying to put together. Early reading is so important and whether the student is above, right at, or below the targeted goal there are things we can do to help improve everyone across the board. Having more specialized small groups, will only help improve our students reading education. Getting an approved groups of volunteers, possibly even upper class high school students (earning silver cord hours)during their free periods, we could provide teachers the support.
Helping Hands is another program I am working on. Basically it’s anything an approved volunteer can do to take a task off the teachers plates. (making copies, cutting out shapes, preparing something for a lesson, etc) Simple tasks that take time, this allows the teacher to focus on the students.
I would like to see more parent opportunities in the middle/high school as well and I hope going forward that’s something I can be involved with. I’ve got some ideas for there as well. I’m excited for the future. Regardless of my involvement in the school board or not, these are things I will continue doing in the future.
Back in May I had someone say I should run for school board and I laughed it off. The more I thought about it, I couldn’t think of a reason not to.
I love our school, I love our kiddos. I’m so excited for the future, what’s already in place and what more could come. I want to help however I can. I’m willing to get dirty and put in the hard work. I have no agenda, I just truly want what’s best for our kiddos and the district!!
I hope this helps to answer a little more about myself and why I am running for our school board.
