School is about more than what students know. It’s also about who they are becoming.

One of the things that makes the IB Primary Years Programme special is its focus on developing the whole child—academically, socially, and personally.

At Liberty, the IB Learner Profile gives us a shared language for that growth. We encourage students to become:

Inquirers. Thinkers. Communicators. Knowledgeable. Principled. Open-minded. Caring. Risk-takers. Balanced. Reflective.

These aren’t just words for a poster. We want students to practice them in the classroom, on the playground, and throughout our school community.

When students consider someone else’s perspective, reflect on a mistake, have the courage to try something difficult, communicate through a disagreement, or choose to act with kindness and integrity—they are developing qualities that matter far beyond elementary school.

Does being an IB school mean Liberty teaches a different curriculum?

No. Liberty students learn the same Utah standards and district curriculum as students throughout Ogden School District.

What the IB Primary Years Programme adds is a framework for helping students engage with that learning more deeply.

Along with learning important content, we intentionally help students:
- Ask meaningful questions and investigate ideas
- Think about big concepts that connect learning
- Develop skills for thinking, communication, research, self-management, and collaboration
- Consider different perspectives
- Reflect on their learning and set goals
- Apply what they learn in new situations

So IB isn't an additional curriculum layered on top of everything else. It shapes how we teach the curriculum we already have.

The goal is not only for Liberty students to be prepared for the next test or grade level, but to become capable, curious, independent learners.

👟 Join us for the inaugural Miles for Meals Fun Run on October 10th at Lorin Farr Park. Every step, jog, or walk helps ensure our local students focus on learning, not lunch balances!

Event Details & Schedule:
Location: Lorin Farr Park (trail to Big D Sports Park and back)
6:00 AM: Packet Pick-Up & Warm-Up
8:00 AM: Race Starts!
Post-Run Party Crossing the finish line is just the beginning! Stick around at Lorin Farr Park for local vendor booths, games for all ages, food trucks, and prize drawings. 🥳
Registration: $30 per participant (proceeds go directly to school meal debt).
Group & Family Friendly! Register individually, but pay together!
Group or family entries can be covered in a single bulk Venmo payment—just list all participant names in the Venmo note.

Learning doesn’t happen in separate boxes.

At Liberty, reading, math, science, and social studies each have important knowledge and skills students need to learn. The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) helps us also look for the connections between that learning.

One way we do this is through concepts—big ideas that can be explored across subjects. Ideas such as change, perspective, responsibility, and causation give students a common lens for thinking about what they are learning.

We also intentionally develop skills that students can use everywhere: thinking, communicating, researching, collaborating, reflecting, and managing themselves.

A student might explore cause and effect while reading a story, investigating a scientific phenomenon, or studying an event in history. The content changes, but the thinking carries with them.

That’s one of the goals of the PYP: helping students make connections and develop skills that transfer beyond a single lesson or subject.

What does learning look like in an IB PYP classroom?

It often starts with a question.

At Liberty, we want students to do more than remember information. We want them to wonder, investigate, make connections, explain their thinking, and ask new questions.
That’s why inquiry is at the heart of the IB Primary Years Programme.

Inquiry doesn’t mean students have to figure everything out on their own—or that teachers don’t explicitly teach important knowledge and skills. Instead, teachers intentionally create opportunities for students to think about what they are learning and understand why it matters.

You might see Liberty students:
- Asking questions before beginning a new topic
- Investigating different possibilities instead of immediately being given an answer
- Explaining why they think something
- Connecting learning across subjects and to the real world
- Reflecting on how their thinking has changed

The goal isn’t just students who know more. It’s students who know how to think, question, and learn.
