Your leaders represented you in Denver earlier this month. You will have the opportunity to hear from each one of them about their experiences over the next few days. Last up is Kim Beger, your OEA President.
The Representative Assembly (RA), held July 2–8, was once again a powerful reminder of who we are and what we stand for as a union. For those who may be new to this process, the RA is our highest decision-making body, where elected delegates come together to debate, vote, and set direction for our organization. It is a vital forum for member voice, ensuring that our priorities reflect the lived experiences of educators in every corner of the United States.
This was my third time attending the RA and I can say with absolute confidence that this year’s RA reaffirmed why our collective voice matters so deeply. The Representative Assembly is democracy in motion. The RA continues to be the cornerstone of democratic engagement within our association, and witnessing our delegates advocate with such clarity, courage, and purpose was nothing short of inspiring.
A few things that made the RA memorable and exceptional were:
• Our delegates from Utah demonstrated extraordinary member leadership. They engaged in meaningful debate, asked hard questions, and ensured that every decision reflected the needs of educators in every community across our state. Their professionalism and passion elevated every conversation.
• There were resolutions and actions adopted this year that will strengthen our ability to support educators, protect public education, and champion equitable learning environments for all students.
• The RA was a model of collaboration. Delegates from across locals came together in unity and a shared purpose. Even during challenging discussions, there was respect and a commitment to finding common ground.
As OEA president, I left the RA energized and profoundly proud. The dedication of our members reminds me daily that our strength lies in our collective action. The RA is more than a meeting, it’s a living example of democracy in motion, and this year’s assembly showcased the very best of who we are.
The Representative Assembly reaffirmed UEA’s and OEA’s commitment to advocacy, equity, and educator empowerment. I am honored to serve alongside such passionate professionals, and I look forward to the work ahead as we turn our shared decisions into meaningful progress for our schools and communities.
