ial conscious for minority issues at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. The Black Leadership Council was formed as a service organization with the main purpose of being a representative organization, standing in the gap for the underrepresented, but growing, African American student body demographic at the University of Texas. The second goal of the Black Leadership Council was to serve as a tool which creates cultural awareness, and cultural diversity on the campus of U.T.P.B. During our inaugural year, the Black Leadership Council fulfilled its commitment to cultural diversity by instituting U.T.P.B.'s first ever Black Leadership Conference in the spring of 2009. In 2009, thanks to the support of many local businesses, community organizations, and The University of Texas-Permian Basin, the Black Leadership Council was able to give $2,000 in scholarships to local area high school senior students. Due to the growth of the organization and the vast success of the Black Leadership Conference, the Black Leadership Council broadened the mission and scope of the organization; one of the Black Leadership Council's expanded goal is to maintain a constant community presence, be the bridge between U.T.P.B. and the minority community, and maintain a sense of social responsibility and social reciprocity through monthly community service projects.
