💙 Advocacy does not start or end at the IEP table.

This morning, I had the pleasure of sitting alongside businesses and community leaders from across Hillsborough County as part of the Hillsborough Ed. Foundation CEOs in Schools program.

I am beyond excited for Elevate Advocate to partner with Doublemint Sitting this year as we come together to give back directly to our local schools, teachers, and most importantly, students.

Advocacy is about showing up. It’s about building community, creating partnerships, and finding ways to make a difference both inside AND outside of the IEP meeting.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible initiative and cannot wait to see what we can accomplish together this school year! 💙📚🍎

🚨 **This should be a wake-up call for special education.**

State complaints are rising significantly, but what stands out to me most is that **these numbers don't even represent the entire country.** The data was voluntarily provided by only a portion of states.

As an Educational Advocate, I don't see this as simply "more parents filing complaints."

I see families reaching a breaking point.

Most families don't start with a state complaint. They start with emails, meetings, requests for evaluations, services, data, and support. A complaint often comes after those attempts at collaboration haven't worked.

And these numbers only represent families who **knew they could file, knew how to navigate the process, and had the capacity to do it.**

So instead of asking why complaints are increasing, we should be asking:

**Why are so many families reaching the point where a formal complaint feels like their only option?**

And if this is what the numbers show with incomplete reporting, what does the full picture actually look like?

With major changes happening in Washington, families are increasingly turning to states to help resolve special education disputes.

Sometimes the signs are small… homework becomes a nightly struggle, confidence starts to slip, or something simply doesn’t feel right.

Those concerns matter.

This is an important one. ❤️

As your local educational advocate, I want to encourage you to get out and vote in our primary election, especially in our school board races.

School board elections can sometimes feel like “small” local races, but the decisions made at this level directly impact the educational opportunities available to ALL of our children, including students with disabilities and special needs.

And as the landscape of public education continues to change, local leadership matters more than ever.

Before you vote, please do your research.

Where do the candidates stand on inclusion? Do they understand the needs and rights of students with disabilities? What are their priorities for funding, staffing, student services, academic opportunities, and accountability? Will they listen to families, educators, advocates, and most importantly, the students their decisions affect?

You don’t have to agree with me about which candidate deserves your vote. But please make an informed choice.

Research the candidates. Ask questions. Look beyond the campaign slogans. And then VOTE.

Our children’s educational opportunities depend on the decisions being made at the local level.

Please don’t sit this one out. ❤️

Research.
Advocate.
Vote.

Knowing your child’s rights matters. Knowing how to advocate for them when those rights aren’t being upheld matters even more.

The backpack was packed.
The new shoes were tied.
And by now, they’ve been at school for a few hours. ❤️

But for some parents, the first day carries a little more.

It’s IEPs and accommodations.
New teachers and new routines.
And wondering if they’re seeing your child beyond the diagnosis, the struggles or the file.

Are they being included?
Is someone being kind?
Are they getting the support they need when you’re not right there?

So if you’ve checked the clock a few extra times today, wondering how it’s going…you’re not alone. 🫶🏼

Here’s to patient teachers, welcoming friends, progress in its own time and a school year where every child feels understood and included.

Ask questions. Know your child’s rights.
Request that it be put in writing. And keep advocating, even when it would be easier not to.

My heart is heavy for another family experiencing an unimaginable loss. 💔

As a mom, one of the hardest things to see after a tragedy like this is how quickly people turn to judgment.

“Where were the parents?”
“How could this happen?”
“I would never…”

Here’s what so many people don’t realize: elopement can happen incredibly FAST.

For autistic children and other children with developmental or communication differences, wandering away from a safe environment can be a very real risk.

And something I wish more people understood: a child’s ability to communicate does not determine how much they understand.

They’re watching, learning, remembering and may understand far more than they’re able to tell us.

Families can take all the precautions; locks, alarms, supervision and safety plans…and tragedy can still happen.

So instead of asking, “Where were the parents?” maybe we ask:
How can we help prevent this from happening to another family?

More awareness.
More conversations about elopement and water safety. More layers of protection.

And above all, more compassion for families experiencing the unimaginable. 💙
