Did you know society normalizes stress levels in childcare that most people wouldn’t last a day in?
Imagine being responsible for multiple tiny humans at the same time. Someone needs help in the bathroom. Someone is crying because their banana broke. One child is learning to share. Another is learning to regulate big emotions. Someone needs a diaper change. Someone needs lunch. Someone is trying to climb something they absolutely shouldn’t.
Now imagine doing all of that while staying patient, cheerful, educational, safe, observant, documenting incidents, communicating with families, cleaning, sanitizing, and making sure every child feels seen and loved.
And then being told, “You just play with kids all day.”
The childcare industry has somehow normalized carrying the physical, emotional, educational, and safety responsibilities of multiple children at once while expecting providers to perform at their best every single minute of the day.
Most childcare providers don’t get uninterrupted lunch breaks. They rarely get to use the bathroom whenever they want. They’re constantly assessing risk, preventing injuries, teaching life skills, and managing emotions that aren’t even their own….. The childcare version of cardio: counting… counting… counting… recounting… and then counting one more time because someone moved.
This isn’t a complaint. It’s awareness.
The next time you see a childcare provider, remember: they’re not just supervising children. They’re helping build future adults while operating in a level of controlled chaos that most workplaces would consider an emergency.
And tomorrow, they’ll show up and do it all over again with a smile and a handful of Goldfish crackers.
