OMS 8th graders once again participated in Grit N Wit, a team building obstacle course with mental and physical challenges. It's one of many activities that build collaboration, bonding, problem-solving, and communication at OMS.

School #5 third graders had a great time at the Queens Zoo and learned a lot about wildlife and habitat.

School Board Recognition Week in New York State is observed from October 12–16, 2026. During this week, we recognize and thank our Board of Education trustees who work as volunteers yearround on behalf of our community, families, and children.

Board trustees attend BOE meetings, sit on committees, enact policy, attend trainings and conferences, including traveling away from their families. Our trustees go the extra extra mile by attending so many school activities -- sporting events, concerts, plays, graduations, and other celebrations of student achievement.

Three of our trustees were also recognized by the New York State School Boards Association. Laura Lisi, BOE Vice President, was given the Board Excellence award and Sandie Schoell and Seth Blau received Lifetime Achievement.

A big thank you to all of our trustees!! And thank you to PTA Council co-presidents, Kim Moran and Ken Wolfrath, for their presentation.

Save the date! Saturday, October 24 from 12 - 2 pm, you can drive up and drop off unused, unwanted prescription drugs for safe and proper disposal. Oceanside High School Front Circle. Hosted by the Oceanside SAFE Coalition and OSD Be Well in partnership with the Nassau County Police Department.

Congratulations to our very own Rocio Saborido, OHS Math Teacher, for her published article in a prestigious peer-reviewed education journal.

Mrs. Saborido answered the age-old student question: "Why do we have to learn this?" with a lesson about how long it takes the caffeine in their favorite energy drinks to leave their bodies.

Using exponents, students learned to measure the half-life of caffeine. They had already learned about the half-life of radioactive atoms, but caffeine levels in their own drinks is a more relatable concept. They conducted an experiment to simulate how caffeine is diluted in the bloodstream over time, and how exponents can be used to calculate how long it takes to be fully metabolized.

In honor of Gandhi’s birthday on October 2, School #4 teachers spoke with students about what it means to “be the change."

Gandhi, who brought independence to India through non-violent resistance, never actually said "be the change you want to see in the world." But he expressed a similar sentiment in his writing:

"We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do."

Second-grade students created bookmarks to be kept in the school library before joining a Padlet with second graders from Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District. Each student shared how they are the change, connecting their ideas with students in another community.

The project gave students a chance to see how their actions can reach beyond their own school and community.

This activity was part of the inaugural "Be the Change Day" in Nassau County, launched by the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents in partnership with the non-profit Shanti Fund. The choice to involve students in grades 10 and 2 mirrors the date of 10/2.

The School #2 staff, students, families and PTA came together over a two-week stretch to raise funds for arts, events and activities for students. To celebrate the final day of the fundraiser, the entire school participated in a Color Run! Students ran their designated track while being sprayed with colorful poweder, dancing and enjoying music from a DJ. Not only was it a successful fundraiser, it was a great bonding experience that boosted school spirit. Win-win-win!! 🏆🙌🤗

Our TAPS mentorship program in action, where experienced teachers guide new teachers (and new to Oceanside faculty) through the four-year tenure process. It's an investment in growing excellent, confident educators and ensuring that our students are learning from the best.

OHS students joined with second graders at School to celebrate "Be The Change Day" on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. The high school students read a children's book about Gandhi, shared a slideshow that they had created, and then sat with students to work on a coloring project about being the change.

UPDATE: Just learned that School #4 second graders also participated in Be The Change Day, although they partnered with second graders in the Plainview District. Hoping to have pictures to share here. 🙌 ❤️
